RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

This was the first time that I ever had a problem getting the P-61 down. It comes in hot but it glides and settles like a baby.

The problem I had was with the approach. I haven't flown much...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

How about a first crash report?

I dumped mine pretty hard on landing at Multi's over McDonough last week. Causes- not much flying the last several months (lost my home field), flying the big...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Here are a few pics from the MAAM show. We spent a good bit of time with Lt. Bolinder and I learned a bunch about flying the f/s 'Widow from him. He only had an engine out once but he said it was a...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

What an opportunity!!!

I unloaded my VQ 'Widow at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum last night, met some of the guys restoring the P-61 there and got a first-hand look at what they are doing. Lots of...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Jan I've seen pics of your outstanding Blackwidow before. P-61 models as big as yours and as nicely detailed are very few and far between. I've actually never seen one bigger than my VQ in person....

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I was asked whether I would be willing to display my 'Widow alongside (or actually under) the f/s P-61 that is being restored during the airshow this year. Lets see.... I get to show off my model,...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Getting better pics than I already have posted would be tough without disassembling the airplane. But I can try to describe what I did. As you can see in the pic of the f/s Widow in the Dayton...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I posted a description of the setup with some pics somewhere in this thread, should have been the latter half of 2005.

I am using a JR channel expander for sequencing. I've got the speed of the...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

The 13.8x10's are just about right for the YS 110's on the P-61. The weaker of my two engines pulls 8900 RPM static which is right at the low end of the recommended range. But the engines have more...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

My VQ P-61 made it all the way through the 2006 flying season with absolutely no incidents!

I took it to several fly-in's during the past year in Alabama, South Carolina and Georgia but have yet...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

My plane trimmed with all the control surfaces visually neutral. I checked incidences during assembly and they were all fine without any surgery.

I think that the flap linkage is a weakness and...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Bob, this was by far the most complex plane that I have wired up and I am not an expert, but I can tell you what I did.

I used a JR 9 ch PCM receiver and JR servos. Since I used micro servos to...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

p61widowrc,

My P-61 weighs about 23 lbs and landings are hot, so the gear need to be tough. I got the Spring-Air 400 Series from VQ and after a couple dozen flights now I've had absolutely no...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I've flown at a bunch of area fly-in's and I am not at all nervous flying in front of spectators, though the crowd at Valley was much bigger than I'm used to. My first flight was right after Mac...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I am using 13.8x10 APC 4-blades. You can get them from Central Hobbies.

I run my 110's on 30% heli and open exhaust headers. Max ground RPM with the 4-blade prop ranges from 8900 to 9100...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I flew my P-61 at Warbirds over the Valley (Al) last weekend. It was the first-ever warbird meet for me and I had a blast. There must have been around 40 pilots at the event but none had ever seen...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Well if you want a "production video" then I would have to convince Craig (rcvideoaddicts.com) to break out his camera and go to work. We'll see, he might think of it as a fun project.. especially...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I wouldn't worry about the weight too much- the plane will carry it fine and everyone is putting batteries in the nose to get it to balance anyway. But clearance from the firewall to the front of...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I flew my 'Widow today for the first time this year (and for the first time since disassembling it to inspect the interior last fall).

The YS's fired up and ran as if they had been in use all...

As you go through the build I recommend that you...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I didn't end up using any servo reversing Y's (I really don't like them) and I used two regular Y's.

There are three servos that need to be reversed- one of the elevators, one of the flaps, and...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Sam, that's my kind of family room you have there! Planes, trains, and a piano to boot!

I just pulled my P-61 apart for a good checkout since I have a dozen or so flights on it now. With the...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Tomas,

Sorry, I don't know if the JR expander module is compatible with Futaba or not. It seems like it should be since you just plug it in to the receiver like a standard servo. But I would...
