the stock ESC and motor can handle a 3s lipo pack. A 3s lipo has a peak charge of 12.6v!
So a 9.6v nimh is NO problem.
I think you would have to take the power lead from the fan on the ESC and...

There are adapters. Redcat is out of stock on them right now. Might still be able to find them online.

While the banana 4.0 plugs are decent, tamiya plugs are not upto the demands that...

yes, you can use a 8.4v pack. wont hurt a thing. a 8.4v nimh puts out about the same power as a 2s lipo pack.
