Its worth it IMO
a brushed motor will run you $20.
You can get a better brushed motor, that will run you $30-$40 if you also upgrade the ESC. But a better esc is another $30 (used)

leopard 60amp brushless ESC with either a 3300kv to 3500kv motor.
The system (motor and esc) run $60 on hobbypartz.com.
that system is very close in performance to what the brushless version...
