I'm not sure Larry. You could use a programmable controller (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1630) to interpret the pwm in and a stepper driver (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1202)at...

That looks like a good start Larry. 
Here (http://en.nanotec.com/linearactuating_drive_lowcost.html) are some stepper linear actuators If you want go that way.

Lose the superiority complex pal, I read your posts and don't agree with you. The mechanical aspects are child's play compared to the power and control issues,but the point seems to go right over...

PIC is a micro controller, basically a computer in a chip that you upload a program to for sophisticated electronic controls. Microchip corp makes them; look to microchip.com or google it...
