That looks like a good start Larry. 
Here (http://en.nanotec.com/linearactuating_drive_lowcost.html) are some stepper linear actuators If you want go that way.

PIC is a micro controller, basically a computer in a chip that you upload a program to for sophisticated electronic controls. Microchip corp makes them; look to microchip.com or google it...
