There is a bearing on the inside of the ez start where the ez start bolts to the motor. If i was to guess that one way bearing needs to be fliped around to.

Have you had the pull starter off? if so you might have the one way bearing in wrong.[ the pull start bearing]

try leaning it out. check the head bolts and exhaust bolts. does the motor feel like it has good compression? If not it is time for a rebuild or a up grade to the 2.5 motor.

They make different number of teeth on the gears. count the teeth on both the old and new spur gear.
