RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Gary

Really good progress on your crossbeams. Very complex shape (x-pattern plus curved profile) will make it more difficult to fabricate and balance the loadings but I'm sure that you'll get it...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Gary

I think that your are now at the hardest part of the build, since you are really left on your own to come up with an inventive way to join things up. I spent many hours trying various...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Gary

The hulls look good. I like your idea of putting the steering servo AND linkage in separate sealed compartment. On my boats they are basically separated by a bulkhead but the linkage and...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Those hulls really look good, right out of the moulds. At 360 grams the weight is certainly within the target. I know what you mean about these boats being big though. I realized this the...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Gary

The hulls look really good. I used a similar combination of 2-3oz layers sandwiching a 1- 6oz carbon layer and like you I found the hulls to be quite rigid. I came in with a very similar...

I share Ernst's sentiments w.r.t. your mould building skills. Real attention to detail pays off and they look simply awesome. Our sailing season is just getting started here am I look...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Great video. It looks like he has found just the right balance point and combination of volume and rocker. That boat is very stable even when sailing on just one hull.

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

I did explore the idea of getting an epoxy based gelcoat but my supplier wasn't aware that such a product existed. He did say the you could add pigment to the epoxy resin and it would work...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Gary

Great progress on your moulds. I would concur that using epoxy is the way to go. No smell, no shrinkage, harder and stronger overall. I also used a PVA mould release agent (and wax) and...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Gary

Very novel approach to making fin moulds. It's something I think is worth a try. You must have a little machine shop setup to be able to make all these neat little metal templates and dies....

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Wouldn't you know it, just when you think you got things planned and ready to go mother nature doesn't cooperate. I did bring all three boats up to my sisters cottage on a very large lake,...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

I used a 72" mast and the mast rake at the top was about 150mm. I only have about 10mm on my glass version and I will probably be increasing that to match the carbon version. I will finally...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Gary

I talked with Ernst about this quite a while back. The newest Nightmnare MKVIII design has moved the mast and finbox aft about 100mm from that of the MKVII. On the MKVII drawings it shows...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Awesome job. This should make for some great hulls. Looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Have you started to give some thought yet on the internal layout, i.e. finbox, rudder log, servo/radio...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Great work. The plugs look impeccable and should result in a awesome set of female moulds. I know how much effort it takes to get to this point. Keep it up and I look forward to watching...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Thanks for the pictures and links. The Bank pop foil is what I have seen used on some other models with reasonable success. It didn't result in full "flying" but it did keep the bows up and...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Here's a way to picture what it might look like. Take an small thin airplane wing - flat bottom, diherdral (round) top - stuff it inside the float hull facing downward at about 38-40...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Ive been doing a little bit of research on this as well as I believe that the boats performance can be improved with the aid of some foils on the floats. There has been a fair bit of...

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log

Looking good. Did you coat the exterior with a layer of glass after it was sanded and faired? It makes for a much less porous and harder surface that can be then primed and painted, prior to...

Good job. The planking looks good of both hulls. Nice shape - fairly true to the original design. Keep the pictures going especially as you move into the plug mound phase.
