Good deal! I also got one used and it ran very erratically and tended to quit. It took some time with the needles, but now it's a really nice engine.

My impression is the carb is a little...

Like Mr. Cox, I suspect your low speed needle is too lean and prevents draw at high speed as well as low. You got this engine used, and the previous owner might have messed up the setting.
