Agree with the last post. Looked like a battery or system failure. I doubt going into a roll would cause you to be unable to recover unless something else was amiss.

It's been a while since I have studied aerodynamics, but I believe the symptoms of the Gee Bee R-2 is a "low polar moment of inertia." Check it out and see if it matches your experience.

Just an observation, but it looks like it has left thrust, or needs more right thrust. It appears to be yawing left all the time evidenced by it's responses when knife-edged.

The landing looked okay to me! Good recovery! A beautiful plane that defined racing planes of that era. A timeless design.
