Adding complexity and weight o a warbird is never a good thing. Complicating any R/C airplane reduces its safety factor. Adding complexity to a plane gives you one more point of failure.

I had a lean condition on my 26 and it gave a popping sound like when an engine is back firing. Other than that try replacing the ignition or the battery.
