It also depends on what type of surface you are running it on. In the grass, it will get smoking hot quick. I ran a 4600 in mine for a while and had to gear it like 15/86 and it would still get close...

More info needed. What KV is the motor? If it got hot enough to burn you than that motor may be toast. If you get it close to or over 200°F, it will damage the rotor magnets and it will be more...

Definitely get the aluminum turnbuckles and pushrods. The stock fixed plastic ones don't offer you any adjustment. Also pick up a pack of the Traxxas Steel Hollow balls for the mini revo to replace...

Is there an Expo setting on those radios? If so try running it at 100% and see what happens. On some radios turning the expo down will actually cut the servo throw down some.

Are you still running the 5 wire stock servo? If so unplug the servo and then see if the throttle operates normally. If it does, then you may need to run a 3 wire servo.

4s lipo may be the problem. That esc can only handle 3s max. It may be going into an overload protection and not allowing the ESC to arm. If you have a 6 cell nimh you might be able to get the ESC...

I didn't have any issues with the dog bones on mine popping out. The only issue I had on mine (and watch for it in your kit too) was the steering drag link was too close to the front center drive...
