RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Hey guys, I finally maidened my Bolt this morning. I have a new rule: don't maiden without an experienced pilot beside me. The last few maidens were totally uneventful, but the Bolt was wild right...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Hey Jaybird,

I've been to the PropSnappers field to visit a friend a couple of years ago. Nice spot and setup.

I took my Bolt to the field Sunday for a maiden, but it failed the range...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Ah, yes, got to be careful weighing by individual gear and adding as just tiny differences in height shift weight. I often put my U.S. Postal scale on the floor, put a piece of ply on top of the...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

I think that is the scale that most of us would want: a scale that reduces our weight and the weight of our models! That would seem to be a VERY LIGHT Skybolt Zor. Are you sure the scale is...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

I also had trouble getting the Fiberglass Specialties Cowl to fit. Much careful sanding. I've got that big Saito 125 on mine but haven't flown it yet. I figure I can use as much throttle as I want...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Try Sanyo Eneloop NiMH Cells. You can get them from Batteries America among other places. They have almost no self discharge (90% left after a year or two I think it is). The also supposedly have...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Yes! I think you forgot landing gear, fiberglass cowl, wheelpants, wheels, perhaps engine mount, control rods and links, wires, etc. They all add up. I think mine was about 9.5 pounds and I used a...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Hummm. I am running a Xoar 16 x 6 on my Saito 125 Bolt that came in at 9.5 lbs. It is a light Bolt because, like Zor said, I realized I didn't need to cover the wings and so I saved some ounces...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Hey Zor, I am all done building, finished and posted pics and info back in the early 50 pages this winter. Just waiting to maiden. I just hang around here because it is one of the few build threads...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Just feathered in the edges. Then I sanded it exactly like they showed in the manual which worked well.

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Good progress Rob67 and interesting comments. I have to agree about the die cutting in that kit, and also the still available 60 size Extra 300 kit. There is none of that "die crunching" I read...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

I'd like to know Zor. I did think the way they did it with two bolts was odd compared to everything else I have built. Does it have to do with the way the interplane struts attach and is it easier...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

I had the same problem Zor did. I was very careful and do not think I made a mistake. I measured many times. I followed the directions exactly. I have built dozens of planes and I build them...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Hi Cougar,

My math suggests you might have 60 hours on that engine. Not too shabby.

Re the cabanes, couldn't you just take some balsa and make some streamlined covers for the wires. Seems...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

On post 1230 I have a couple of pictures of my gear mounting, which is kind of copied from Jbirds. I added some nice dense 3/4" tri stock, and then laminated a couple pieces of plywood so the gear...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

I had my TNT Aluminum Gear made to their Skybolt pattern, but deliberately asked them to make it 1 1/4 " taller and my gear is mounted flush with the bottom of the fuselage rather than buried as per...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Yes, Yes, Yes. I didn't understand what Zor meant and followed the manual. Big mistake. Do not fully install the carbane holders until you have the bottom wing done. Very very scary to see you...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

I think my firewall warped too. I think perhaps the GP firewall ply was not that great. I might have replaced mine with aircraft ply, but not totally sure. Anyway, that is an option. Or a built...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

I decided to use the U=bend connection on my elevator halves, and then actuate it with one of the supplied metal in plastic jobs; the other was used for the rudder.

Sig uses that method in...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Well, it is last on my list of several planes to maiden because it is the nicest. So I don't really know what it will fly like. I think the 125 weighs about 3 oz more than the 100 when you add in...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Mine was 9.5 pounds with Saito 125 and heavy TNT gear, fibeglass cowl and wheel pants. I substituted kit balsa with lighter balsa in the tail sheeting and perhaps a few other places.

It...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Yeah, I am now thinking about getting the Sig 1/5 Scale Kit. I like Sig Kits. My Ebay floats will be perfect on it. I have a Saito 82 that would be perfect on it. It comes with a fiberglass cowl...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Hey Guys,

Listen, first of all I am impressed with anyone who has spent a lifetime flying the real thing and lived to tell about it; for me it was only a laregely unfulfilled dream. Even RC...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Well Zor, while it is possible that lack of preflight preparation was a factor in the crash, I would mostly attribute all of my maiden crashes to my inability to trim them while flying them. Many of...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse

Here is how bad trim gets you straight into the ground Zor. First, the rates were probably a little too high for a maiden as I "thought I could handle it". Then, the trim was off and making the...
