Hello xtratorque,

You need a bigger engine to swing a decent 4 blade prop for the P-51 in terms of speed and pulling power (pitch and diameter). Not a lot have been successful with a 4blade prop...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Wow. What size 4 blade prop is that? Idle looks great. Is that the actual 4 blade rpm (11K+)?

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

The Top Flite planes in my experience are solid in terms of wood quality and construction design compared to the same class airframes from other manufacturers. You'll notice it especially during the...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Mine with the OS200FS is around 10.5lbs. Watch out when banking. The H-9 Blue nose had some problems with weighing around 11-13lbs. as well. Let me know when the maiden is so I could bring my AT-6.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

If you would like to turn a 4 blade prop for this plane, then a bigger engine is needed to fly well. I was able to use an APC 15.5x12x4 by using an OS200FS that weighs around 35oz. For your magnum...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

R/C Foolish,

The H-9 P51 is heavy when assembled based on the reported weight here compared to the TF P-51... maybe part of the reason why it tip stalled on take off. Besides, a lot of people...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Kelly,

RBean is correct. The 16x8 is a good prop for the DLE 20.... but, if you want more speed then you would want to get an APC 15x10. A club member has it in his 60 size P-51 and it is so...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

I will try to post some pics of the installation. It has a bell crank mechanism that it linked to the main air valve.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Springer,

Yes the OS120FSIII is the best option for me now, but the biggest prop I was able to use with this engine is an apc 14x10/15x8. The 160fxi on the other hand, can swing a 17x12/16x14...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Great work Badazz.

I am also in the process of completing this P-51 60 size kit built that I got. THis one is covered with the Glamorous Glen scheme. My TF AT-6 does not have support in the...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Tom,

Try to fly it first with the stock retracts. Mine held up well even when putting an OS 200FS. It all depends upon your landing skills. With the robart struts, it should help with the...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Michael,

Jeff's explanation illustrates it all. Aside from that, experience from actually running a 12 pitch prop at around 5k rpm using an onboard rpm sensor and a speed gun. Jeff's estimate...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Michael,

When I first flew my TF P-51, I started out with the regular OS 91FSII with a 14x8 2 blade. Not enough speed, so I installed an OS 120FSIII 15x8. Wanted to swing an 18" prop so I...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Max,

It's ok to fly it at 5" cg especially for the maiden flight. I have flown mine that way for more than a year with an OS200FS (with turbo muffler) swinging a 4 blade 15.5x12 apc.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Hello Corsairjock,

What 2 prop blade did you fly with yours in comparison to the 4 blade? I'm currently deciding if I should get an apc 17x12 after a few runs with the 16x12 2 blade./15.5x10 4...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Here my latest pics of the P-51 with the big OS 200FS swinging a 15.5x12 4 blade prop. I have tested 2 props today... the 4 blade 15.5x12 and a two blade 16x12. Both are apc's. The 4 blade prop...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Bobby,

Actually, my reason for installing a a very big 4 stroke is not for the ultimate speed (I think it will be pretty fast with a 16x12-14 2 blade anyway), but to fly it with a bigger 4 blade...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Here's my P-51 fitted with a new 'Merlin' (OS 200FS). The old 'Allison engine' (OS120FSIII) is taken out already. I will try an apc 16x12-14 for break in runs and have already ordered a 15.5x12 4...

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

orthodoc,

There's an access hole at the opposite side of the oil cooler at the fuse (aft) underneath. You can trim it out as an exit hole. The full scale p-51 opens up too.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

Wow. That's 85-95 mph there on a YS120. My OS 120FSIII could only turn an apc14x12N to around 8600 so hopefully its unloading more in the air to get a decent speed.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications

You really need to open up some holes in there to let the hot air out. Here's what I did on mine. (OS 120FSIII)
