When Do You Need an OPTO ESC?

What sort of rules are there regarding opto isolation? One of the more experienced guys at the field says 4s or greater (just to be on the safe side).

I can't seem to find out how poles are in the stock motor. Does the ESC in the BNF plane come programed for efficiency or power? Thanks in advance.

I am reallybeginningto hate small planes. I got a micro P-51 as my first aileron plane. I really didn't know about center of gravity, I was lacking skills, and it was so tail heavy it was crashed...
