RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Maudib-- the vinyl looks great. The price sounds fair. Sign me up! Nice work.
Some transfer strips would be a good addition; for which I would pay extra.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

The setup is a bit unorthodox. Usually there is negative only in the top wing so that the bottom wing will stall first and allow a more gentle stall entry. The stab usually has a positive incidence...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Bob--- Sorry to hear about your Ultimate. You are right they all have expiration dates on them. Just too bad it couldn't have been after flight #500. A couple of questions: Did you perform an...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

I'm not sure what Santa Claus has to do with servo power; but hey, the dude did bring me a whole stocking full on assorted chocolate goodies. With my ever expanding waistline that's what I call...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

I suppose there is someone out there that could figure out a way to strip any servo gear metal or not. That's their problem. I have no concern about stripping the 5245's.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Is the 3004 metal geared? If not, that would be a source of trouble if you plan to do 3D with very high G maneuvers. I am planning to use Hitec 5245MG X 4 on ailerons which are 75 oz in @ 6V and...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

I think that Aerobob is correct in saying that these gear are the generic longitudinal spindle type with no cross tying. Everytime the gear flexes there are large shearing forces generated that will...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Maudib--- Your points are well taken, concerning wing loading. I will refine my statement to say: If two high performance aerobatic aircraft, one being a biplane and the other a monoplane, have been...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Maudib--- Here's a quote from MAN design guru Andy Lennon;"Aerodynamically. A biplane's wings have mutual interference; a loss of maximum lift and considerably more drag at intermediate lift...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Maudib-- Please don't accept it as fact because my brain doesn't always work. That's why I wanted DH's input on this. I'll look in a couple of reference books on aircraft design also; but I'm fairly...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Maudib-- When calculating wing loading on a bipe you don't use the full wing area. I can't remember the exact % to use but I think it is something around 70%. Maybe Dick H could comment on this since...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

MM-- I have not yet mounted stuff but doing a bit of "balance beam" work I think I will need my rudder servo in the tail since I will be using only one elevator servo that will probably be mounted...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Bob-- The post about overkill was intended for Maudib. He mentioned that he likes overkill on certain design parameters in one of his earlier posts. The particular post I was responding to stated...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

In this case more so than if you place the servo in the tail under a hatch as I would do with the Ultimate. The reason for the long pushrod in the Edge is that I could not afford the tailweight. By...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Maudib-- You can get 8OZ but you have to give the "overkill" attitude a vacation. Use the mini servos on ailerons; use one elevator servo. That is about 5.5 oz right there. By changing to adequate...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Hey guys -- I knew I could stir things up a bit by talking about my servos. Bill, I wasn't clear on my elevator servo choice. While I will only use one servo it will be either a JR8611
or a Hitec...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Maudib--- They probably will make them one-piece. That's why they need the measurement. All they have now are two halves so they would have to guess at the total "fuselage span" of the gear without...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Bill --- I think aluminum might be the wise alternative here. The rear sweep of the gear might make a good CF layup difficult and then there is the spotty track record of CF gear in general. I am...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Since you brought up the gear issue; here's what I have been thinking. I currently have 3 planes with F/G gear. The BME Edge and Yak have known issues with the gear delaminating/cracking; now there...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Hey Bob --- We are saying basically the same thing. I said that GP sorta copped out when they put a 1.6 on the plane, called it "the Ultimate 1.6" and then put 1.6 size gear on it. All along they...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160

Bill --- I hear Ya'. These ARF's are incredible values and it is a buyers market to boot. You might want to try a fix to the composite gear that I did on my BME Edge. I use some .025 unidirectional...
