Try the same values you used with your JR radio in negative values. I think you'll find them very similar. I've been doing that with my 12FG and haven't had any issues.

You should be able to turn it by hand, you can rotate it as needed though. Put some electrical tape on the plier jaws to prevent damaging the nipple.

Normally the back up battery will last longer than you own the radio. More than likely the firmware was corrupted when the battery died, or is unable to initialize due to the battery being dead....
