RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

If your talking kit building then reading the description gives you a ball park figure, not exactly fact, it depends on how the plane is built and they will vary from builder to builder. Don't get...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

I'm so glad this post came up, I have seen so many different opinions on pattern planes and how they fly or don't fly. I usually don't fly the one I still have in flying condition unless I see the...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

Just got my Tower Talk and the Kaos 40 ARF is costing $135.00 and is an outstanding jump into the pattern plane if you are just wanting to test the water.

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

Gerry, even I could see that one! Acdii, go look for a build thread on the P-51. The Golds are really a nice build and very easy with the interlocking parts. I don't know if it comes out tail heavy...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

Dick, fully agree. There is just so much more involved in aircraft set up then straight and level.
I had to laugh when acdii mentioned flying by the barn. Once a student I had owned a funky little...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

Seems to me the photo I posted of my DB shows it as a tail dragger? It is a small photo though but I have to transfer photos from one puter to the next to get them from my file. Long story, guess I...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

I have never seen one any other way then a tail dragger. In the plans it shows you where and how to mount fixed gear or retracts or where to mount the mains as a trike.
As I recall there was an...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

The 91 OS FS didn't fit. It's been a while but maybe I could have ground down the mount more?? The SK is a two stroke 91 and it fit, it was tight but it fit, but I got it in there. As I recall I got...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

A .52 four stroke? Not well at all. The planes are old Class C pattern planes and designed for two stroke 61s on a pipe. Knowing ahead of time the fire wall is too small for a 91 it's easy to out...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

One of the kit built Dirty Birdy's from a Blue Jay kit. The design is an original Bridi and it is a old school build. No glass fuse, it's all built up. I did try to install a .91 four stroke but...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

My last building student was in his 70s. I use the 4* 60 as the teaching aid. Years ago I used the Super Sportster 60 but someone told me about the 4* so I changed over to it. My 70 year old student...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

Like Dick, my instrucor was a pattern pilot so I had pattern or presision drilled into me. Club events only though. The old class C planes are what I flew and I never thought I would be without a...

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?

I flew the original Birdi Kaos and last summer I built the Blue Jay {Bridi} Dirty Birdy to replace it after almost 20 years of service. If anythjing the DB flew better then the Kaos. Second weekend...
