RE: Several means of increasing the lift of an airfoil (video)

great vid, i'm always interested to see what the flow is really doing.

My best successes with stol devices have been with simple LE slats ( not slots - the building required puts me off these)....

RE: Never thought it could happen to ME !!

i know this is an ic forum, but on a safety note, its worth remembering that big electrics can be just as bad for chewing people, especially since when armed all it takes is an accidental nudge on...

RE: Dose Gas = Slow?

speed is all a bit relative (entirely in fact, says Einstein!) big models LOOK slower in the air and we tend to fly them more distantly. Geting a big model to appear very fast is hard work and can...

RE: Saito - Pro FG 20

I don't own an FG14b, but, looking at the specs, prop rpm, thrust on the usual 14x6, and weight of the engine/ignition/batts etc it doesn't take the brains of a rocket scientist to realise that the...

RE: Test for CG

agreed totally - if there was one perfect model with one perfect setup, that always handled crisply and predictably like a Ferrari of the skies we'd all be flying that one and there would be no need...

RE: my take on wings

thanks shoe  , rmh, obviously this thought experiment is designed to eliminate 'air under the wing' - so what i'm getting at is does this show that lift is possible even when air can't be flowing...

RE: Test for CG

this is how i check the cg for a fully aerobatic model. trim the elevator for level flight at cruising speed (say 1/2 - 2/3 throttle). Roll inverted and see if it climbs or dives. If it dives then it...

RE: my take on wings

Ok, here's a related thought experimant. Imagine a very flat bottomed airfoil (Aquila), sitting stationary on a very long flat glass plate. Now, accelerate the airfoil forwards keeping the bottom...

RE: Saito FG-20 or 21

ooooo, ok then, so a 17x6 woodie is out.  Fair enough I'll stick to the 16x6 unless JXF (Xoar) start making a 17x4. which is probably not likely i know, since such a low pitch on this size prop would...

RE: Saito FG-20 or 21

ok, well if the 17x4 is a bit thin, would a 17x6 be ok do you think?

AND, once fully run-in , would the 17x6 cause bad, bigend wear???? what's your best guess on that please?

RE: Saito FG-20 or 21

thanks W8ye, 17x4w eh! i'll bear that in mind.  Though from what Neo said i'm concerned not so much about wether the FG20 can spin the prop (i'm sure it would turn and fire even with 20" prop), but...

RE: Saito FG-20 or 21

hmmmm, well, if Neo got big end elongation after a few gallons then I guess overloading the engine would greatly worsen than scenario - in which case my plans to run it somewhat overpropped on like...

RE: Stall Speed

The best way to estimate your models minimum speed before the increasing angle of attack stalls the wing is to FLY it, slow it down at a safe height and let it stall - you can then SEE how fast its...

hmmm - well i don't honestly know much about Li-ion or LiFe cells so i can't have an opinion on them, but i accept that those experienced in their use must know whats what (or watts watt Lol).

I'm new to gas too and tbh still building the plane, got an as yet unrun FG20 for it - now about those opto kill switchess........... well i DID buy a conventional opto kill switch, but then i saw on...

RE: Airfoil-CG

dunno if this adds anything useful here, but the on-line CG calculator i used for my big old timer cabin design put the CG at about 45%.

As stated above it didn't ask for an airfoil section spec....

RE: Flaps or flaperons?

IMO a big engine will be much heavier, thats gonna raise the wing loading and make her fly faster - it'll be even harder to land in a small area. Big inboard flaps, with lots of drop (40 degrees or...

RE: help pse: need advice on Rigging angle for an undercambered airfoil

thanks guys, it seems i had it pretty much right then - setting the stab to be parallel to the wing's chord line. It sounds like it should be about right withing a degree or two. unfortunatley...

help pse: need advice on Rigging angle for an undercambered airfoil

once again i return to bathe in the light of your wisdom..............

hope you can help guys. some of you may recall i'm building a large'ish (9 footer) old timer cabin model (my design) and i...

RE: Can I Produce Washout with Ailerons

I'll chip-in if i may. Just had a look at the model specs - its a portly 71" low winger with a design AUW that can reach 12lb jeez!

Well, heres my advice, maybe worth a try for less effort than a...

RE: Is L/D ratio a measure of aerdynamic efficiency - can i use it to help refine my airfoil choice?

Nah! don't worry variable camber and flaps are out for this version, but the full span LE slats........may just be in - still cogitating on that one - yeah, they're draggy for sure, but seeing a...

RE: Is L/D ratio a measure of aerdynamic efficiency - can i use it to help refine my airfoil choice?

Hmmmm, now if I put a full span knuckle joint in the airfoil at the 66% chord position I get a Variable Camber Airfoil - tidier and more drag efficient than flat plate flaps.

So what angle...

Wow!  very many thanks guys, especially to Bruce and Jon for all that enlightening research on my behalf.  You guys really came through for me.

Well, my journey is at an end,  the die is cast, ...

RE: Is L/D ratio a measure of aerdynamic efficiency - can i use it to help refine my airfoil choice?

Ok Guys, we're getting there now.

Thanks Bruce, the Goe500 stats at least look good - and i have managed to get hold of the graphical profile plot without a printer, by calling up a template in...
