RE: Futaba S-Bus?

Actually, this was my initial reaction to S-bus when I first saw it, it _introduces_ another single-point failure mode (regardless of the others that already exist). I don't see how your entire...

O.S. GT-55 header pipe or quiet muffler

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a header pipe (i.e. for a tuned pipe) or a good quiet muffler available for the O.S. GT-55? I'm thinking of going gas 50cc with this engine, but those awful little...

RE: Ultralight with a DLE 222cc for engine ?

True, but believe it or not, it's chump change for 40hp that'll crank a prop reliably on an airplane ;). Oh, and the gearbox is another $950 or thereabouts. you'll even pay a couple hundred for a...

RE: Ultralight with a DLE 222cc for engine ?

You're a lot more likely to get off the ground with something like the Rotax 447:

It's about 40hp and of course has a bunch of...

RE: New Cessna..what do you think?

Probably its main problem is going to be the engine. Even with the weight loss of the new "light" O-200, that engine plus prop still weighs a ton compared to its competitors (the Rotax 912 series and...

RE: I've had it with Saitos!

I would caution against doing any torquing while the motor is still hot..... that aluminum is a lot softer at operating temp than when cold and the risk of galling and stripping the threads is a lot...

RE: OS 180 AX 2 cycle ?

Well.. all true.....

I still have my OS pipe from my 1.40, I've often wondered how it'd perform on a 1.60FX, assuming I could find a header pipe that'd fit the motor (Macs makes one or...

RE: OS 180 AX 2 cycle ?

Well they already sell a motor like that, the 1.40RX....
I had one of these back when they first came out and, of all the OS's I've ever owned, it was the easiest handling, starting and running...

RE: Comparing the Sounds of Engines

Well, gassers don't sound much worse than my full scale, which is one of these:

Mine has a different prop and gearbox, but this one and I have the...

RE: How can you tell if an engine is broken in?

That's why I said "eventually".... it won't be fully broken in after just a couple tanks of course - the rich running at the beginning will keep it from glazing the liner if not just slap burning up....

RE: How can you tell if an engine is broken in?

On my full scale gasser, the only way to tell is the cylinder head temp starts to stabilize at about 300F, which occurs after about 10 hours of use. Even after the initial breakin it ran at full...

RE: Anybody fly Ultralights?

I also own a powered parachute (that I'm actually selling), they're a lot of fun but only in almost zero wind. Any wind or turbulence and the fun goes away real quick ;).

a 2-seater requires...

RE: Anybody fly Ultralights?

Oh yeah, one other thing for folks thinking of going to full-scale to think about: full-scale will really mess up your r/c skills ;). I started with fullscale in 98, most of that ending up being...

RE: Break in oil for Zenoah G26

Doesn't make sense to me either. Oil doesn't produce the power, the gas does. A friend of mine used to run a g23 in his xcell heli and after a lot of experimentation he ended up at 50:1 for the best...

RE: Verbitsky's geared engine

Speaking of that, here's a picture of my gasser (Rotax 503) with the gearbox and prop. The gearbox is equipped with a centrifugal clutch and a 3.47:1 reduction. The max HP of the motor (50 hp at sea...

RE: FULL SCALE RC FLYING LAWS IF ANY?

There's a guy in TX that has a very nearly full scale R/C plane, which, IIRC was something like an Extra or some other sporty looking model. He brought it to one of the CAP airshows at San Marcos, TX...

RE: How safe are homebuilt planes?

The best way to summarize a response to this is to simply state that the experimental category exists in the FARs for a good reason.
What I've found over the years flying homebuilts is:

- For...

RE: Sweetest sound you ever heard

I'm as fond as anyone of the big Merlins and radials, but I have to admit I kind of like the sound of my Rotax 503 on climbout. The exhaust itself is a nice note but the cooling fan makes a very loud...

RE: 2stroke vrs. 4stroke

Yeah, I can't quite say I agree that 4-strokes are smoother. I put a .26 surpass on a little plane that I had found in a dumpster once. It ran great but had a little more vibration that my .25 2...

This is actually more of an aerodynamic problem than a power problem. you will by all means see a change in power available, but the wing needs to travel faster through the...

RE: Altitude reduces max RPM of engine!

I just to test all this, sorta, last week when I finally took my plane around the patch after moving it from sea level (700' in central TX) to 7000' (Santa Fe, NM).
The plane is a larger gasser,...

RE: Full scale flyers....roll call.

Lessee, started in R/C back in high school, and then in the mid 90s flew a GP ugly stick for a long while. Then switched to helis, which I flew for a year or two. Then in 98 switched to full scale...
