It's been a LONG time but when I used to work in a forging shop we hardened a lot of stuff, Case hardening would be the best for gears IMHO because it gives it a hard surface but not the brittle...

Someone showed up at my club with a fly baby, Beautiful plane and BIG but this had a one piece wing so you need a vehicle large enough to move it LOL (I'm sure your used to larger planes) Very docile...
