I used a method I found for weathering, you take chalk (regular chalks you'd find in a craft store) and scrape them with a razor until you have a nice pile of dust, brush the dust on with a dry brush...

ZDS - can you explain the work you did on the tailwheel? I don't like the way mine looks either - even before first flight the balsa was slightly split where it enters the rudder.
