RE: Aerodynamics of lifting fuselages (strange project)

Why don't you build something javlin like and have wings deploy after it reaches max height?
Just an idea.

RE: effect of prop pitch on efficiency

I would also look at a 12*9

If I have a chance I'll explain why in the future but a 12*9 should be your best prop and it will have a power load somewhere in the range of a 13*6.5 to 13*8.

RE: Lift Coefficient # generally for flat bottom airfoil?

A small change in the Lift Coef. will not have much effect on the stall speed.

Stall Speed f/s= sqrt(52/CL) * Sqrt(wingload in oz)

So if the CL=1
stall speed = sqrt(52) is about 7 and...

RE: effect of prop pitch on efficiency

Not to throw a rock in the gears, but I question the idea that this will be the best selection. In general a larger diameter prop has the potential to operate more efficiently but in most cases the...

RE: Prop effective speed

Loubud, Agecat

Sorry misread the post. I have been building planes for my brother for many years, I build he crashes, its only been the last few years that I've been learning how to crash...

RE: Prop effective speed

Loubub & Agcat.

Brothers what a great invention, no better person to share the sport with. Glad it worked out well for you both.

RE: Prop effective speed

Better late than never.

I just want to agree with most of what has been said. Yes there is a point that extra rpm really doesn't get you much. Both have been talked about. One, the prop tip...

RE: Question about static thrust and pitch

Eric,

ThrustHP assumes that ALL props have the same coeffecient of thrust about .088, this just ain't so...there is a a relationship between pitch and thrust.....a low pitch prop, say Pitch/Diam...

RE: Trainer / Instructors

Rob,

You’re a smart guy if you’re thinking about going with SPADS. In all honesty your first SPAD plane will be the most expensive(mainly because you will end up with a lot more material...

RE: Beginner recommendations

SkyBob,

I would not discount building a spad. I started out flying a Dominator as a first plane. With a lot of trainer time on FMS and a couple flights on a buddy boxes i was on my own. I'm not...

RE: engine question

No Flaps,

I don't have a TT .61, but I do have an OS FX .61 pretty much the same engine. (with a 12x6 I would think you would get about 12500 to 13000) I don't have ST 51 but it basicly falls...

RE: Thrust rule of Thumb

Chris,

If you can't get this motor to fly the mugi you might want to check out something like what Dick's building. Say something about 900 by 240 for the wing. Just a peice of corro with a...

RE: Anhedral tailplanes on aerobatic types

All,

A round of applause for a civilized debate. I'll just add my 2cents worth. Just because you have perfect pitch it will not make you a great musician or great composer. You will still...

Chris,

Here is what I do...yes it is kind of lengthy but pretty simple..might help. Thru a large part of the flight envelop(from the stall point to about 2 times the speed at stall) you can...

RE: Aerodynamics formulas

Brian,

Lift=Cl*1/2*q*V^2*area
Drag=Cd*1/2*V^2*area

Cl is the lift coeff.
q is the density
(Imperial units q=.002378 slugs per qubic foot at sea level, metric units q=1.225 Kg per...

RE: Maynard Hill TAM 5 Aspect Ratio

Wow a lot of information to look at. I was not suggesting that a higher AR plane might not be better, only that given the limitations, that the induced drag was not a concern at the speed the TAM...

RE: Maynard Hill TAM 5 Aspect Ratio

Very interesting discussion. To me it looks like the plane was optimized for the engine prop combination. At the speed and wing loading the plane was flying at isn't the induced drag a small part...

RE: What propeller?

Joseph,

Yes the 5.5 stands for the diameter (length) of the prop. The 4 or 4.5 is the pitch of the prop. The greater the pitch the higher the angle of attack that the prop is operating at. ...

petergomes,

The plans are not really suitable for balsa/ply construction. If you have had experience building balsa you could adapt the plans but you would need to design the rib layout etc. ...

RE: Should wide, flat trailing edge be included in Chord?

mattbeme,

I think you might get in to real problems with the dropping rons...once the plane has any speed up they tend to dart and tuck wildly (that's been my experince anyway....I don't have...
