It it were me, I'd invest in a NiMH pack instead. The NiMH chemistry is much better than NiCds and will give more power and longer run times. I'd not buy NiCds today unless I wanted the cheapest...

SCR cells will have a lower internal resistance, so they will deliver more power more quickly. They will potentially allow your boat to go faster, but cells alone will not double your boat's speed.
