I have one of these boats with water cooled brushless motor and esc. I think I also have some of the extra props for the jet drive....

you will know, it's hot enough when the solder is pulled in by the wire and connector tab.
You should pre-tin your wire, I even pre-tin my connector tab. Then hold them together with something...

I've always heard and learned that holding the can farther away from the project helps. The solvent dissipates before the paint hits the foam.

Did you check to make sure there was no binding in the drive train? any resistance could cause problems.
Are you running 4s or 3s? If you are running 4s, make sure your motor is rated for that...

It is better to connect the water to the esc first then to the motor. The esc is generally more important and can't stand as much heat as the motor can.
