RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

I order direct from APC props, but the last order I got hit with a big shipping bill. They delivered a little box that weighed about 2 pounds using Federal Express instead of just using the Post...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

I usually use 3/16" medium weight balsa for fins and stabs. If you do a good job of airfoiling it, you would never guess that it is 3/16" to start out with.
I might have used 1/8" hard balsa for...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Well stay tuned for future builds.
It really helps to have some kit building experience....but shy away from the old school kits that were built like tanks.
The foam winged GLH is borderline...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Got a flight in this morning with the 5x5 prop.
The engine seems to handle it on the ground about the same as the 6x4 MAS, but it doesn't unload in the air like the 6x4 [actually 5.75x4] did.
It...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

The .09 was a good engine to pep up any 1/2A design that ended up under powered.
I built a $19.99 Hobby Shack SST and it was pathetic with a TD .049 but flew nice with the .09

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

I've never seen a TD .15 in person. I wonder how much they weigh...?

I've seen a few Conquest .15s, but never a TD.

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

I used my drill press and a flat milling bit to mill some of the height off those fins.
I don't see it as a big deal on a 100 mph plane.
It would be way more of an issue at 150 mph and really...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

It's handy to pick up a $20 caliper at Harbor Freight.
With this tool, I could measure the opening on the Magnum case and then see if a C/L venturi off a OS .15 would fit.

You actually don't...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Don't worry about it. That's why they call these topics threads...my threads are / should be open conversations.

The Magnum .15 should be at the top of the list for bang for the buck value....

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

The venturi is the piece that replaces the carburetor. Some RC engines are sold with an optional control line style, single speed fuel feed. Most control line planes run at a single speed until the...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Very nice...! Where did the brass fittings come from...?

You'll really like it. With a well padded fuel tank your fuel feed will be steadier than ever.
Prolonged dives will still be a problem,...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

PB, by roundstock I meant that the venturi was machined from a hunk of round aluminum bar stock [roundstock] that was laying around. I've also made them out of nylon. The venturi in my Cyclon I made...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

The backplate cover is too thin to tap threads into, but it is possible to attach a 3/16" thick disk of aluminum into the circular recess of the backplate. A pair of 2-56 countersunk screws and a...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

OK, I'll try to outline the steps.

I drilled straight into the crankcase through the lug. The hole is 1/16". I also have 1/16" brass brazing rod to plug the hole with.
The next step is to...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Thanks PB..!

Crankcase pressure with a drilled out venturi is a great way to run the Cox TD engines in your GLH.
There aren't that many tuning tricks to learn. 5/32" is pretty standard to...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

The tap on the lug is handy, easy to get at for refueling. You could remove one of the upper screws that hold the backplate on, then use a threaded pressure tap made out of steel or brass in place of...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

SRV, I never did look at the carb..it's still in the zip lock baggie. I made the venturi just a tiny bit smaller than the hole going through the crank and I'll bet it's somewhat bigger than the hole...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Thanks UP.!
Who knows how many of these kits got built and flown over the years...?
Way back when I built the original kit plane it was a learning experience with the unique construction and of...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

I got some decent video of it yesterday.
There was about a 10-15 mph wind blowing right to left on the screen.
You can see that it doesn't take much for this combo...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

I got a brand new ASP .12 going today.
I used the pressure tap that comes with the muffler to deliver crankcase pressure through the engine mounting lug.
Also made a venturi for it and use a...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Got it running today.
It weighs 18.5 ozs RTF.
400 mah NIMH, Electron 6 RX and 2 HS-81 servos.
After 3 flights to get it dialed in I got some video [and doppler] of it. It hit over 110 MPH...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Mike....I'm not sure about the elevator, but it's pretty close in size to a couple scratch built GLHs I have left over from racing. I made this stab slightly larger than my 1/2A GLHs, since this wing...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

Here's a little progress.
The next hurdle is to make a remote NVA and hopefully it'll work with the Enya .11
With crankcase pressure, it ought to work OK.
The rest of the plane is ready to...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

It would be good to ask one of the guys who worked at Cox if the .010 had special needs for a sloppy ball socket or not.
The .049s should be run with zero slop, but no binding.
I can't imagine...

RE: 100 MPH GLH ASP .12...???

A rule of thumb for unloading is 10% if the engine isn't already overloaded and it's bolted to a plane that will allow the unloading.
So a ground rpm of 28,000 could add 2,800 rpm after the first...
