RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Rob,
I can't speak to the gas set-up, but my Jug has Robart retracts with 7/16" oleo struts plus an onbard glow system/battery and weighs nearly 9.5 lbs.. The OS-91 four stroke flies the plane...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

I also had to add in a good amount of down trim on the maiden flight. This seems to be typical of the model, but once the elevator is trimmed out I believe you'll find it to be a very good flyer.

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Ed,
Many builders have had loose formers in the belly pan (mine had two loose). A gap between the wing and belly pan is usual in this model, and H9 provided a narrow strip of Ultracote to cover...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Super Sean,
I have heard of at least one other person whose belly pan was not fuel proof (I believe their post was early in this thread). As I recall, he solved the problem with a coat of clear...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Bill,
We've been having a wild winter in Memphis. Friday we got 3 - 4" of snow, today it was 70 degrees with T-storms, and this weekend's forecast calls for an ice storm. We haven't had a decent...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

I'm using the ElectroDynamics EDR-103 glow driver. It works great. It has a switch point adjust to set when the glow goes on/off and has an external red light I mounted behind the cockpit seat.

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

BalsaBandit,
Sounds like a good solution. Are you going to use an on board glow driver? I added the machine guns as well. I need to add a bit of machine gun blast weathering to complete the...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

I am running an OS-91FS in my P-47. I installed it at the stock 45 deg. down angle and cut a quarter-size hole in the cowl for the engine head (although I sure hated doing so). The OS-91 is a...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

The 650 straight RoboStruts will work if you attach them via music wire. As I found out, the 650s are too short unless you mount them to the wire struts. The 651 offset struts are longer and I am...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Nightmair,
I started with a drill bit, until I had a hole large enough for my dremel sanding drum to fit, then just sanded until I reached the edges of the circle I'd traced on the cowl.

Doug,
You should post some photos of the Christmas light show. I'll watch the news for a brown out over Texas when you flip the switch.[8D]

Doug,
Did you get a chance to view the video I posted? The quality isn't great, but it gives a taste of how the Jug looks in the air.

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Nightmair,

It turned out that I did have to cut a hole for the engine head. It only required a hole the size of a quarter for the head, another the size of a nickel for the needle valve...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Unfortunately the pilot does not come with the ARF. I used an Aces of Iron 1/7th scale "Chuck" pilot. Since the plane is between 1/8 & 1/9 scale, I had to cut off a bit of the pilot bust to make it...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Thanks. Writing the review was a great learning experience.

The fly-bys in the video were at about 1/3 throttle. I should have included a full throttle pass for the full sound...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

I posted a video clip of my P-47 on Speeders Model Shop's website: SpeedersOnline.com . The clip is on the main page, just below the P-47 photo in the review I wrote.

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Jerry,
In my opinion, flaps are not needed on this plane... although they could certainly add to the cool/scale factor. My P-47 lands nice and slow and has shown no tendency to drop a wing at slow...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Doug,
I am anxious to see how your Jug turns out. The recessed retract rails will add to the scale appearance and the flaps will be a nice touch as well.

BTW...I received a set of the...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Bob,

I used Robart 551 (85 deg.) retracts and 660 (7/16" straight) Robostruts. The retract rails needed some modifications to accept the retracts -- filling/re-drilling the screw holes and...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying

Jerry,
Mine came in at 9.2 lbs with the OS-91, air retracts, oleo struts, and an onboard glow driver/battery. It was a bit heavier than the manufacturer spec's, but flew great.

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying
