RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Not for sure how many hours in that wing Cody. Guessing 50-55 to get it that far. A see through static model would be interesting, mebbe something for the WACO museum?

Jim, I'm not familiar...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Got some ribs built but haven't had much time to work on it lately. Hoping things slow down soon so more time can be devoted to it.

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Managed to squeeze in some shop time to work on the spruce wing spars. Got all 8 of 'em (4 top, 4 bottom) roughed out then milled the 4 for the top wings to near net shape. A little hand work and...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Finished up the jig for the top right wing. The pics (in order) show the the first station set up to include the dihedral and the 3 end braces; placing the spacers between stations 1 & 2 then...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

We have wood! If you ever wondered what a bargain bag of spruce looks like then have a look at the first pic. There's close to 30 board feet of lumber there. The longest piece is right at 5', the...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands. Perhaps too much. Maybe a tube frame wouldn't be all that heavy? Thin wall tubing is fairly light weight actually. Up the size of the model and there's a...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Might be able to salvage the root rib and some of the ribs from the tip. The aileron and flap are keepers too. Oh DUH! Y'know, sometimes I wonder how I ever got that degree in engineering. I too...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Evan, I agree- what you describe will surely save the wing but I have decided to rebuild it entirely with spruce spars. Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Co. offers a $37.50 "bargain bag of spruce". This...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Yuppers Cody, spruce was the material of choice. Howard Hughes also recognized the value of it and used it extensively in his monstrous "Spruce Goose" flying boat. We'll definitely go with spruce on...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Evan, I have difficulty warming up to the idea of going with a built up spar so how about using 6mm ply or spruce or basswood as Cody suggests? How about other alternatives? I want to keep the wing...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

You bring up a valid point Evan. The spars are balsa and the plan is to epoxy the brackets to the spars once everything (struts & wings) is lined up and adjusted. With the relatively low wing load I...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Finished up the flap and pulled the aileron together. It was a little tricky getting the aluminum on the aileron leading edge but it's on there and the other side should go better now that I know how...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

I have stumbled over this differential question (confusion?) for quite some time. Thanks for clarifying this Evan and I stand corrected. The C7 does not use Frise ailerons. After going back through...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Green zinc would look cool. The full size C-7 I'm modeling from has silver brackets. Something to consider.

Been working on the aileron and studying the differential aspects of the full size...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Thanks Cody! It's looking good but it's not contest grade. Working from an unproven plan provides plenty of challenge- and mid stream changes. The pic of the model hanger is deceiving. It looks like...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Top left wing is well underway. The jig sure made the glue up easier and more accurate. Laid in the remaining structural parts of the flap and aileron bay. The second pic below shows the full scale...

Thanks! The project is moving along slowly but I guess if forward momentum continues then slow doesn't matter?

Got the wing root and spars in the jig, set the 2 1/2 degree...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Thanks Cody! You're right- all of the control surfaces are cabled directly to the yoke with exception to the flaps. WACO went "high tech" by using vacuum to power them.

Check out Don's gorgeous...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Thanks Don! About ready to power that beauty up eh? Hope you can post a video of her in the air. It would be great to see another cabin take to the sky.

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

One set of top wing ribs finished and dry fit to the spars. Having trouble deciding which type of motive force to use for the flaps. Servo power is definitely the simplest but air power is more...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Yup, I'm nuts for sure[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]. Just ask my wife! Going this route is a good way to save weight without compromising strength. It makes for easier wire routing too and built up truss ribs...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

I agree. An inch or two can make a big difference.

Cut out one root, a set of spars and enough parts to build up the first 10 ribs of one top wing half. The flap bay will be built into these 10...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

You are quite welcome!

Cody, I guess it depends on one's definition of variant. WACO introduced the custom cabin series in the 1930's as a spin off of the standard cabin. They took a standard...

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

No, not the custom cabin. The easiest way to distinguish the difference between the standard cabin and the custom cabin is to look for a strut at the trailing edge of the wings near the wing tip....

RE: WACO Custom Cabin Project

Full scale C-7 wing construction is fairly simple- both top and bottom wings have spars running full length, one at the leading edge and the other about mid chord. The truss style ribs are built over...
