In this case, I wish OS would look at it, not merely replace it. The step in the ring is very small, as is the pin. It sounds like a design issue, not an abuse issue.

Can't beat a Suburban for hauling pattern planes. On contest day, I take two 2 meter pattern planes and all associated gear like a pop up, cooler, tent, table, chair, etc. In a pinch, I can fit 3.

Not a bad choice. Build it as light as you can. This will help it fly slower and give you more time to respond . Set the throw rates fairly low, and add some exponential on the transmitter.
