I guess it will work for covering sheet but my concern is of the added weight. As you indicated it needed more filler to hide the weave. Then paint over that.
I'm not sure how much weight is added...

Not that I'm any expert at this but, an old geezer taught me how to dope on Dacron long ago. He only uses fabric on the open structures, like wings.
