RE: TF Spitfire build

Long time, no post!

How is everyone's build going? Every day I come through my garage and see my Spitfire in a state of half-way-built and it makes me sad. REALLY need to get back on the...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Myron,

Could you post a picture of the retracts? I'm not familiar with those. You may be able to use 3/16" Robart struts, if they attach to the retracts. That's what TopFlite recommends in any...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Pedro,

Thanks for the info. I'll buy an incidence gauge and check it out before going forward with construction. Worst case, I think I could somehow cut the stab off the fuse (please God don't...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Pedro
No I didn't check the incidence of the stab before gluing. Thought others had found the stab saddles were very accurate. How should I go about checking this with only half the fuse built?

RE: TF Spitfire build

Hey Myron,

I'll have to check out the pictures for sure! The Spitfire is a really fun build. I've got to get my pictures taken of the upper fuse and the work I've done on my retract installation...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Myron,

Welcome! How is the build going? Posting pictures on RCU is (thankfully) quite easy. Once you take your digital picture and save it to your computer, you will see a "Click here to upload...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Scott,

That's great that you've had the chance to work on a full-scale project! Do you fly? It's always been a dream of mine to be a pilot. In any case, if you ever have a chance to be in the...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Tim and Scott,

Thanks so much for the input. It's amazing how helpful everyone is on this thread, and on RCUniverse forums in general.

Tim, GORGEOUS planes!! I hope my Spit looks half as...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Scott and Pedro,

Thank you for the awesome input! I think I will end up using water based poly and .5oz fg for the bird. Scott, like you I plan to use a primer to fill the weave of the fg. I may...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Also, is it just me or did anyone else notice Top Flite recommends the wrong axles for retracts? The manual calls for Great Planes Bolt-on 2x3/16" axles (GPMQ4278). These are axles for sheet metal...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Friends,

How much fiberglass (thinking 2oz) would you all think I will need to glass the entire bird? Also how much (and which) resin should I use and how much hardener? Going to order it from...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Scott,

Thanks for the advice!

I came up with a slick way to keep the stab level from left to right, and in the correct incidence. Since the 1 3/8" block recommendation of TopFlite isn't...

RE: TF Spitfire build

All,

Quick question: on pg 36 step 1 of mount fin and stab, TF describes a 1/4 inch die cut fin spacer. The only 1/4 inch due cut I see similar to the shape and size in instructions and on plan...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Pedro,

Thanks for the info man! I will probably experiment with creating the FG parts for the wing fillets and small pieces. Worst case, if they don't fit 100% accurately I can just clean up the...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Pedro,

Good point about being able to recreate the cowls. I may seriously consider this, for the cowl at least. For me, I don't think the extra labor for the fillets is worthwhile. I may make...

RE: TF Spitfire build

Pedro,

For your FG cowl etc, you just used the release agent and wax and formed it around the ABS? Won't this slightly change the dimensions (since you're laying it on top..)? Or are you using a...

HOG colors :) Wouldn't require trademark if you change to a similar, but not HARLEY orange.

RE: Condor Hobbies Flying Machine Contest

Here's another design. I like the red and black with white stripes a lot, but I think it would work in many other colors. Maybe more color ideas to come.

The Center Section:

Framing up the center: This was all very simple and straight-forward. I had some slight issues, in hindsight, with the wing bolt plates. For me, they stuck up...

Good idea with taking a step back. I had to do the same after working on the top fuselage on Sunday. Some of the instructions during this part of the build are not clear (especially the...

I've never heard of a spring punch like that, I'll have to check that out. Sounds interesting. I have a set of punches for doing the same thing, but it requires an accurate tap with the...

RE: TF Spitfire build

P,

If you're going to use the dowel-to-fill-the-hole method, here's an idea that will prevent any cracking or 'drill bit jumping':

Drill out the blocks with a larger drill bit, then fill...
