RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Alright. Time to post a semi-final update. The ridiculous temperatures in Texas combined with my personal schedule have conspired to keep me away from tuning the DLE-111 until this morning.

Ok, thanks TOM. Sounds like I'm not terribly off in technique then. As far as being authoritative in flipping the prop, that I definitely understand.

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

My intent was do exactly that, peak the top end. I know that after doing so, the low end will likely need to be adjusted again. Unfortunately, real life interceded and I had to stop after that...

Been on vacation, but I got the engine out on the stand and fired up today.

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

I do not believe we will ever know to a certainty sufficient to get folks who have commented in this thread to agree. I know there was no "smoking gun" failure point. I know the crank was bent. I...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

No arguments here. The starting place for those adjustments should be the factory settings.

Yeah, starting my little 26cc job was as simple as putting the electric starter to it and firing...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

So, it's been a bit, but time for an update. This weekend, I got the engine unboxed an back on the test stand. Below is a clip of the "new" engine running. As an FYI, I had already primed and...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Nah, Robert's still around, I spoke with him Saturday afternoon. He had the engine torn down. The bearing were/are fine, which, after turning the crank with the back of the case off, doesn't...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Other than the other reasons people have posted, which aren't necessarily wrong either, in this case, I very heavily document a lot of what I do in the hobby for a number of reasons. I like to have...

Here are the promised pictures. I added a bunch to the photobucket album from earlier. The later images are packing pictures for Robert.

This likely where the large metal pieces came from. It...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

I don't have a run-out gauge to measure it properly, but looking at how much the back of the crank case would move as I rotate the shaft, trying to get it back together, I'd estimate the run out at...

Thanks for the correction Jody. I'll check the rollers just to satisfy my curiosity. I'm going to pack the engine up this evening and send it back to Robert. I'll give the crank shaft and other...

Here is a link to all the pictures I took: http://s211.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/wpmcnamara/airplanes/DLE-111%20autopsy

The photos are in reverse order. Here are a few key ones though.

That is what I thought. So 1/16" would be bad right. :D

I'm joking, I know the answer. My next post will have pictures.

Pictures coming shortly. Preview is nothing broke off.

Question: How much play should their be in the inner race of the rear bearing?

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Of course now I feel like an idiot for not noticing the sound when I started it. [:@]

I'm thinking possible a failure in the rear bearing. Anyway, as I said earlier, I get to go fly today. :)...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Minor correction in your event sequence, and I am the cause of the error as I made a mistake in my first post. The initial flip in the video was with the choke off. At the starting of the video, I...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Robert is who I bought it from and isn't your "averag joe". Shipping damage is very unlikely. DLE packs their engines quite well.

Let me clarify on the bent crank. I do not in any way think...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Basic inspection says all the carb stuff is impact, but it does bear closer inspection.

As far as the prop moving/being loose, that could be. I need to inspect the prop remenants around the...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

The prop was drilled on a a drill press and the prop bolts to tightened until the lock washers compressed, no further. The bolts were not bottomed out and for the ones that sheered off, I was able...

30:1 as specified in the manual. That video is the entire runtime on the engine. I know what lack of oil can do, but you'd have to have pretty much nothing to kill it that quick.

I couldn't...

There should be sound on that video. I heard it when I was checking it before I posted.

As far as the insides go, I will certainly post pictures if I tear it down.
