Pitts S1-S by EMHW
Hello folk's. I have ordered a EMHW 46% Pitts S1-S and it is about a week out until it should be shipped. So I am starting this thread a little early to get some insight or opinions on what I plan. I welcome advice, suggestion's, or recommendation's in regards to my plans. This is with the exception of one, and that is my choice of scheme's. I will be replicating Jacquie Warda's airframe. She is an aerobatic pilot, internationally known, and flew the Pitts in shows and competition for many years. Unfortunately it crashed but fortunately she was not harmed. That was the end of Pitts for her, but I love the scheme of that plane so here goes with replicating it in R/C. Below is a photo of the plane and the next post is the list of intended component's.

Oh! Yea! I forgot that didn't I. It will be either a DLE170 or a Valach 170-4 stroke. Don't know for sure just yet. I know which one I would prefer.

Come on guys, I see there are a few peeking in. I plan on ordering the electronic's on Friday so if anyone see's something amiss let me know before then. This will be the first plane I put that much stuff in and even though I researched the mess out of it, a second opinion would be reassuring.

Hi Robert,
It looks like you have covered all the bases on what you are installing. I am not familiar with the servo's you are installing so I really can't offer my opinion there.
You better get the 1/3 painted before it arrives or you know what will happen
Later!!
Anthony

Thank's Anthony, that's all it takes for me to be comfortable in my choices. As for the servo's, I have read a lot on them, even watched a video or two. They seem to be very good and fair priced. The only reason I am considering them over Futaba is Futaba is nuts in what they want for that kind of torque, IMO. I don't mind spending the money for quality but I'm not in the habit of throwing it away for brand sake.
Nope! I will not touch the big one until the little one is done! Nope, I hope.

Thank's Flyer, I really like it to. And I am in contact with Jacquie about the plane as well as the current owner of the crashed remains. As a matter of fact the gentleman whom has it now has sent me every pic I could possibly need of details. And he has mailed me swatches of the fabric with the colors so I can match them. I have talked with both manufacturers of the Pitts and they both conveyed the same information in regards to the differences between the kitted S1S and the S1T. So, so far this should prove to be a very detailed replication of the original. The only draw back will be with the builders ability.

Hey, I peek in on your threads every day, just don't say that much. I don't know how your
drawing skills are but I would have one of those hot shots airbrush that eagle head on there. I'm sure
you can handle the rest of the finish.

Thank's R.L. that's sorta the plan. My vinyl cutter will cut the eagle head out of white vinyl and I have an airbrush artist that will do the rest.

Hey Robert,
My only thoughts regarding your equipment selections is as follows. Do you have an engine recommendation from the kit manufacturer? I'm just thinking that even if the airplane builds very light, which I'm sure you will do, the sheer size of the plane with the extra drag of a biplane, the two motors you show may be less than satisfactory to you. If I remember correctly, Bill Hemple's big Pitts S1S (I think)had a motor in the 210cc-220cc range and his was in the 45% TO 50% SIZE. Of course he set his up for 3D which may be why he used the larger motor in his. Just a thought.
I cannot wait to see this monster come together. Now, get back to work on your Baby Pitts..............LOL
Take care,
David

Thank's for the concern David. This will be a full out scale build which will be a little heavier than there specs I would assume. They call for a 120 size so I figure in with the 170 size I will be ok. That's my thinking anyway. And because of the following video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueBSibTEE6g , same plaine (kit wise) and same engine.

WOW ! ! ! !, what a video............ I stand corrected.......... That Valach 170 sounds AWESOME in that Pitts and it pulls that monster around with relative ease...............
Take care,
David

I was under the impression the kit had to be made. Well a couple days ago I emailed the mfg with my curiosity as to how it was coming. This morning I get an email stating it was shipped on 5-6-2013. You can imagine my surprise and delight. So basically any day now it will arrive. Woo Hoo!

Not at all Paul. The kit as listed on Vogelsang's web site is $1495.00. But he does not stock the small one so it was drop shipped which cost around $400.00. Here is his site, http://vogelsang-aeroscale.com/civilianemhw.html , and belive me if buying a EMHW it is best to buy through him. I checked with the other vendors overseas and they were a little more expensive on the kit and the shipping. Same goes for the Valach engine. I know, more than you asked.

RE: Pitts S1-S by EMHW
I have been doing this hobby for quite sometime. And everything I have done has always been somewhat small and manageable, financially and physically. But as I was getting towards the end of the small Pitts build I could not find anything that really jumped at me. I have wanted to build a large scale plane for quite sometime but have always thought the cost was just to ridiculous. And I still do, but, about a month ago I was talking with a friend about a large scale he was dreaming about and in the process I realized I'm myself am not getting any younger and who knows what tomorrow will bring. So I took my own advice and decided it was time to build my Mac Daddy plane and the Pitts is a sweet machine to do it with. Afterwards it will be back to reality. But for now I'm living the dream!!! Woo Hoo!

Good for you and I very much agree. Better to give with a warm hand than a cold I always say.
I'm kind of in the same boat....have been thinking about a big Pitts or one of the Airworld warbirds for some time. I've had a bunch of the Great Planes size Pitts over the years and really like them so maybe I'll do a big one.
Best of luck with yours.
