Default First runs with Skymaster F5, rear fuse way to hot.........

So I finally got all the install done on my F5, set up is Skymaster F5, AMT Pegasus SP (35lbs thrust) with a Tam pipe.

Did the first run today and the engine was flawless. Unfortunately after a 2 minute run the fiberglass in the rear of the fuse was getting so hot it was getting soft.

Do bifurcated pipes generally run quite a bit hotter? I guess I'll have to pull the engine and pipe and line the back of the fuse with ceramic blanket. Sucks, putting that pipe in is a major pain in the arse. Oh well, beats the alternative of the back end falling off!

How long did you static run it ?? I try not to run my motors for any longer than I have to on the ground.Most jets will get pretty hot being run on the ground for extended time. Just a thought

The first F-5 I had did the exact same. Painted the engine compartment with three coat BVM heat shield and covered the rear section of the fuse with the BVM heat shield blanket. Problem solved. (Jet Central Rhino used for power).

Just wish now that I had mounted the front of my pipe differently. I'll have to cut some mounts out to remove the pipe.
Only ran the engine about two minutes.

I had this happen to my SM 1/4 Hawk. I applied some BVM heat shield and moved turbine back by .25" and there was less heat in the rear section.

Which way is 'back' - please explain if you moved the turbine forward or back in the fuselage.

Back is away from the pipe... So forward in relation to the fuse.

How much gap did you have? I have a 3/4" gap between tail cone and bell mouth as it is.

So I have to ask, what did you think of the flight?

I have a Byron F20 that is very simiular in size, and when I layed it out, It blows my mind how little wing this jet has..

Did it seem to take longer to take off than you exspected?

I don't know. It was only an engine run that I did. Need to put heat shield in the fuse as I said. Just to hot. I won't do anything more until that is done.

I drilled some holes in the back to vent the trapped hot air. I also cut off more intake ducting allowing more airflow. Mike

I have always lined my jets with this insulation. I just stick it in with red rtv and done. It has worked great for me. That is the hatch of my T-38. I just get it from lowes in the home insulation isle.

Im laying up some NACA ducts as I type this to put into the hatch on the bottom of the fuse and then I will also be lining the fuse with ceramic blanket. Hopefully that does it. What size engine are you using? This Pegasus is putting out 35lbs. I hope the tam pipe will be ok with that.

David, is your T38 the Skymaster one? What are you powering it with? What is in between that insulation foil layers that you use?

It is the skymaster T-38 powered by a super eagle 30lbs of thrust. It flys it good, a rhino would be that much better but by no means am i disappointed in the super eagle. Love the jet its my favorite now. And there is nothing between the fuse and insulation. I just rtv it to the the surface of the fuse or hatches. ITs cheap and light. If it gets to hot you will see the insulation will shrink and wrinkle up.

Hi David,
I meant what is inside of the aluminum insulation, it looks like bubble wrap. Have you ever had any part of it melt?

I use that stuff to make my wing bags, I hit it with a propane torch and it melted quick. I them put 3 layers of bvm paint and it works great at keeping heat off the fuse with very little weight

I've been using the heat shield form Aircraft Spruce for 7 years now. It is self adhesive and really helps with the radiant heat. Combine with NACA scoops in the bottom and it really keeps my planes cool with my Wren 160's.

Hi Jack,
We haven't met but we have talked a few times. I have a friend that has some ceramic blanket so I'll use that.

As for the rest, I am moving the turbine ahead a bit further from the bellmouth to increase the gap, I've added some NACA ducts on the bottom of the fuse. I'll be adding the blanket all through the back of the fuselage, I've also added a structural brace to the rear wing former. Hope to have it ready for next weekend!
