Killer Vee by deadline
Trying to finish up this vee tail and thought I'd post a pic and see if anyone had experience/advise about flying characteristics. I've got an O.S. 10 in the nose and am going to go with no landing gear.
I got the kit from bayplace several years ago and it wasn't quite as advertised. Supposed to have been complete but was missing most everything but the wing parts and a few shaped pieces. After letting it set for quite awhile I decided it was time. Deadline is imaginary, like a reality show. New Years day will be 2 years I've been coaxing it to life and it should be ready for maiden before then. Yes, I am a very slow builder.

Looks complete to me - at least on the outside. I've got the .40 size kit hence the interest in your post. Too lazy to drag mine out and wondering if your kit had - what I remember as nicely machined cut selected balsa parts - the same for what few parts remained? Wondering if your airplane includes rudder function as well? Noticed the control surface only takes up about half-span of V-tail in your picture.

I know I have the mag with the Killer Vee and Bumble Vee reviews somewhere.. I'll see if I can put my finger on it. Pretty sure they used an OS 10 in the V.

Yes the wood selection was great and the parts that were there were awesome. Definitely a quality kit.
I went back and forth a few times on the idea of rudder function. Finally came to the conclusion I'd save the weight and space since this is the small version. On a 40 I think I'd have to set it up with rudder just for the cool factor. Even with mini servos this feels tight compared to anything I've built for a long time.
Just waiting on new servo for throttle so shouldn't be long.
Thanks CP. I'm really glad I went to the trouble of salvaging the kit now that I'm this close.

Turn out great should be a fun plane to fly if possible post a vid
What sort of field conditions do you have, cut grass?
I see you have a MA prop on the nose what is the size?

Yeah the prop is one I had handy at the moment for a trial fit, I think its a 7-3 or 7-4. What's a good nitro content for the .10? I've been using FAI and 5% fuel in my large glow for so long I need to restock some for this little beast. As for the field, I've got a grass strip behind the house.
I'll definitely try to get some video when the time comes.

For the Lil .10 no bearings I would go with 12% castor 8% synthetic 20% nitro should make it
peppy enough to enjoy your efforts.
- APC 6.3x4 would be a prop to try for speed.
- Since you have a spinner the MA7x4 should do the best.
- MA 5.5x4.5 I have some they are great with a spinner nut. Covered up with a 1.5in spinner the rpm
will pick up but the loss in thrust may make it appear sluggish, but not out of a dive in the straights it will hit 75 mph ish.
The older OS .10 will need trial and error to find what pulls best for your desired mix of thrust and speed.
- APC 5x5 elect may be the ticket.
- APC 6.5x3.7 is another mix of speed n thrust.

I haven't tried the APC 6.3x4 on the OS, but it is a perfect match for the Norvel .074.

I figured it would let the ,10 get up in the middle high teens where most of these little guys put out good power.
Yes - I was astounded how hard the .074 pulls on this prop, and the top speed is good too. I quickly found out how overpowered the Hacker Funny was with this combo (to my delight of course).

I have owned 4 of these currently have two vintage ones from the early 70's the carb and muffler tells the tale. I bought them for the small carb for my car conversion engines.
He may have one from the 80's. Do you have any info on the engine?

The FSR series is perhaps what once gave OS a good reputation. The piston and liner are very well made (and well selected/matched I guess) and running-in is a breeze, just make sure to use a lot of castor.
After the FSR line, OS stared to produced the FP series with ABN technology, but false marketed it as ABC, and peeling liners can happen to anyone...
From the engine review of the FSR you can see that it "likes" nitro. This is simply a tell-tale sign of a low compression setting in the stock form. So that's good for the US market I guess, but for others it means that there is more power to get by shaving off a little from the head. Here are some numbers from the ones that I've played around with;
.10 FSR, stock muffler, stock head shim, 10% nitro, APC 7x4 prop; 14800-15300rpm (from two different engines)
As above but after removing about 0.15mm from the head (still using the stock head shim); 15800rpm
As a comparison the later .10 FP will also make around 15800rpm (same fuel and prop) with is stock muffler. The FP weights around 160g compared to the FSR at 145g (both with their respective stock mufflers).
I'm currently moving to another house and have not flow in a while, but I have "stick" modell that's eager for its maiden with the .10 FSR in the front;

I made a free-hand template from paper and then cut the film on a piece of glass. I used two colours for the flames which is perhaps a little overkill, but makes for a little nicer transition to the blue I think. I first cut the yellow according the template then gently tack that onto the red film, and cut the red by freehand against the glass. Blue is then put down first and the red and yellow in one go. Not that difficult actually ones one has decided on a template and the colours. I didn't take that many pictures along the progress but here are two that show a little bit;

That's great news thank you Dave for keeping us in the loop here, we will enjoy any video and pics your able to share.
If a MAS 7x4 should have no problem pulling the plane up and away on launch. Good static number with spinner.
Should perk up to 16.3k + unloaded and do 55 -60 mph + wide open.

1/1/2014 started cutting missing parts, 1/1/2016 first flight!!!! KV flew great! Mid 30's with 9mph crosswind, no sweat. Took it pretty easy and simple on the first flight but very pleased. The wing is going to have to have some stripes or checker board. Top and bottom look the same and the V tail doesn't quite give the orientation I hoped at distance.
Got a few pics and my 8 yr old grandson took some video that I'll post when I edit a bit.
One happy slimer driver....
