Default Top-Flite Giant P-40.

Hello All!

I have a couple of G-62's I am thinking of sending out to possibly be turned into electric ignition, but more importantly to get running again
Should one of these engines be repairable I was thinking of my next plane to get for it! and I think I have settled on the Top-Flite P-40.

Just wondering if anyone has had / flown this combo, a Zenoah 62 with the top flite p-40. I watched a youtube video of a guy rippin' this setup around and it seemed to go pretty good!

Any input appreciated!

you may end up nose heavy. I have a DA 50 in mine and no lead. Not sure what to tell you about cowl fit

I had installed one in a TF Giant P-40. It was heavy and needed a lot of weight in the tail. Removed it after a couple of seasons and installed the G-62 in a TF giant P-47. A much better fit.

Sell them both and get a DLE 55RA or the newer 61. Light and powerful engines with great reliability and performance. Just add NGK CM6 plug and make a nice throttle curve and your set.

I have the big P-40 too and I'm thinking going even bigger with the DLE 85 and a three blade 24 inch prop.

I would pick a P-47 or Corsair for that engine. The other problem for me is the carb. It sticks out way too much to consider the G-62 for any type of narrow cowl plane. Also the weight would be better served in a P-47, Hellcat, Corsair, AT-6, Hellcat, etc...

As far as the engine it is a workhorse with a long history of being a very good dependable engine with easy to get parts.

But a TF P-40? I would pick another engine like the TP 70 and slap on a 3 blade prop and add the counter balance in the rear elevator...but that's just me

One point of clarification on the G-62; Vogelsang-Aeroscale sells a 90 degree manifold the points the carb to the rear. I installed one on mine and it runs fine. Surprisingly, it increases the efficiency to the point that the main needle is now open less than 1 turn. I would guess that the manifold eliminated the spitting that occurs with piston-ported induction.

Agreed with the poiunt that a Corsair would be a good choice. I have one of the TF giant Corsair ARF's. Along with the weight of a EME 60, it needed 30 ounces of weight. My P-47 with a G-62 needed no weight.

thanks for all of the information everyone!
that was one of my concerns with the p-40 is that the carb may stick out and that it might be a bit heavy. I was checking out the h9 corsair, may go that route. first things first is to see if i can even get the engine running reliably enough to put in a new warbird.

Here is an old build thread on the P-40. I added counter balance and ribs to the control surfaces but the carb sticking out of the side still turned me off...Glad to hear someone makes a mod for that. I will have to check it out. Good info Lifer

I've flown the H9 Corsair and I've been flying for a few years now a TF Corsair. The H9 is heavier than the TF. The G62 doesn't have the power of the DLE's and weighs more so I wouldn't suggest that combo. The TF Corsair with a DLE 55RA is a very nice combo and is easily 5 pounds lighter.

I can tell you the H9 cowl is larger in dia than the TF and the DLE 55 fits exactly to the diameter of the TF cowl.
If your set on the P-40 then any of the rear exhaust engines will be perfect. They install very clean and compact. The side exhaust engines will need the Pitts exhaust and that's a little bit of a pain. These pipes put a lot of leverage on the header bolts which leads to loose bolts and leaks. Ever since the rear exhaust engines from DLE came out for example I see no reason to run anything else. I just wish the new 61 was rear exhaust, that was a lame decision on their part I think.

The G62 would be ok in an AT-6 or similar with a bigger cowl and short nose moment. No mods needed for that.

Keep the information coming! I have done a little more research, does anyone know of a good g-62 size ARF AT-6. I have literally always wanted an AT-6 and if there was a company producing a nice ARF I'd go that route in a heart beat. Right now, looking at the available ARF's, I think I am leaning toward the TF P-47 bubble canopy. It seems like a real value at 639 dollars and from what I am reading and hearing on here the G-62 would be an appropriate powerplant for this bird. Again, if anyone can steer me to an ARF AT-6 my decision may lean that way. Thanks again everyone for all of the information, it has been a great help!

Check General hobbies in California they have an AT6 ARF with glass fuse... currently not in stock but it is less than the Top Flite P-47

AC2, thanks for the reply. I have seen that airplane online before, seems it is always out of stock. There is a place, planepowerhobby, that has 4 in stock but they want 759, for that price I think I'd stick with the p-47.

Remember the fuselage is fiberglass not built up and fiberglass is preferred. That's worth the extra money for sure.

Have a 4.2 Sachs in mine. Balanced slightly nose heavy with batteries at CG. This plane flies exactly like the TF P51, just more driving needed on the ground. Repainted mine with latex to remove the ARF look.
