Default Clipped Wing Cubs.

Some years back I had a Great Planes Piper Cub that I built as a clipped wing. It was a fun little airplane that I could wring out without getting into too much trouble. Now I am pondering a 1/4 scale clipped wing and would like to know which kit is most suitable. Since I am thinking about a clipped wing, a one piece wing isn't a problem. Although I want a reasonable scale out line, this would be a throw it in the back of the truck and use it and abuse it kind of plane. Any kit suggestions?

I had the 40-60 size GP Cub kit as well. Built both full and clipped. I agree great little plane. As far as 1/4 scale goes, my suggestion would be a Sig 1/4 sc Clipped. Same story, I built a few full length as well as one clipped. Nice kits and great flying airplanes. Plans and instruction booklet are well laid out. It will take more building though. The wing is 86" if recall. You could modify easily making it 2 or 3 piece if needed.

The Sig 1/4 size clipped wing Cub is an excellent choice.

It has very robust construction. It will stand up to quite a beating and not break. The wing is one piece, with a very strong construction for the dihedral break. Unlike others, it will not stress the fuselage sides if you wring it out in the air. With bolt on wings, you'd need an extremely strong and strengthened cabin structure to withstand the loads of extreme manoeuvres.

Mine was powered with an OS 1.08 FSR since that was the largest glow engine that I could get for it at that time. I took no special care to be gentle with it. Multiple full power snap rolls never caused any structural failure or weakness. On a cross country flight, it landed in a field of rocks and tress stumps. The only damage was to the wire landing gear. Off water, it was pure joy and equally capable of more than Cub style acrobatics.

It can take all sorts of abuse and never fail. Tough is putting it mildly. There is a bit of work to building it since there are many pieces and many steps. It's all easy though and as mentioned, the plans and instruction manual are excellent. It is well worth your time and work.

And cover it with fabric. Sig Koverall works well. None of that plastic film stuff.

Of all the planes that I've had over many, many decades, if I were restricted to just one, my Sig 1/4 clipped wing Cub is the one I'd pick.

The Sig 1/4 scale clipped wing Cub is an "old" kit. No laser cutting and sheets of plastic for windows. Definitely not a beginner kit. It flies great but you may want to get some opinions of the Balsa USA version

let us know what you get and how the build progresses

The Sig Cub sounds like what I am looking for. I don't mind the building. In fact I built the smaller Sig Cub (1/6 scale?) about 25 years ago. The one piece wing is a big part of what I'm looking for.

mgnostic: if you build the Sig 1/4 scale clipped wing cub you will love the way it flys. I have one that is powered with a OS 120 FS it will fly all day with no surprises Yours Paul T
