Default getting ready to buy a miss gieco. newbie questions

Hello all.

Im fixing to guy a miss gieco RTR boat from a main hobbies. I own a traxxas revo so I'm not totally ignorant when it comes to rc's. However the whole electric thing is new to me. So I have several questions.

Can some one tell me what these acroynyms mean.... ESC??? BEC??? 4s? 5s? 6s?. Ive been reading alot on here, but cant decifer the meanings.

I want to run lipo batteries. I had these in mind. they look pretty cheap compared to other lipos and have had good reviews. what do you think?????? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=10285 Do I need a special charger for these lipo batteries or can I use my NiMH charger??? I realize I will have to solder deans connecters

I also read somewhere on here that if I decide to run lipos, then I would need a programming card? what is that and how involved is it to program?

The bottom line is I dont want to burn the electric motor up w/ to big of a battery, but I dont want to be the slowest in the pond

ESC = Electronic Speed Control
BEC = Battery Eliminating Circuit

4s = 14.8 volts
5s = 18.5 volts
6s - 22.2 volts

Lipos are 3.7v per cell so 4 x 3.7 = 14.8 ect.
Yes you should get the programming card. I think their like $19.99, comes with instructions. Really REALLY easy to program. Lipos can not be run fully empty so the programming card turns on the low-voltage-cutoff (LVC) meaning when the batteries reach a certain point the boat will either stop running or slow down to 50% so you can bring it back in. Being new I would not run without turning on the lvc.. Deans connectors really don't have a place in FE boating. I would choose a better connector. I run 5.5mm bullets like those batts come with, but the ec5 connectors will work well

* DO NOT USE YOUR NIMH CHARGER ON LIPOS!!!!

thanks diesel!!!

now were getting somewhere. I noticed the batteries I mentioned are only 2 cell but they are 5800 mah. The manual for the MG reccomends a 6000 mah dynamite gattery. but they are higher in price.

could you reccomend me a battery that will give me more power and work good with that stock engine? w/out breaking the bank or burning my stock motor up

the only reason I mentioned deans connectors is because that is what the boat came with. I like the bullet connectors better. So I assume I'll have to solder bullet connectors to the wires on the boat.

I assume this is the programming card I will need. http://www.proboatmodels.com/Product...ProdID=PRB3311

I'll probably get this charger. charge up to 6 cell lipos for 75 bucks. if anyone knows of something better please comment.

These are great packs here bro..Its what I use and they work great and after a run they are luke warm...And there cheap!
As for a charger I would get a good charger that will charge 2 packs at a time..Otherwise you will double your charge time with all your packs..

The batts that Dirt Hawg mentioned will work as, as well as the pack you listed inthe opening post. Both packs will work just fine for a stock MG. My fav set of packs are these: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=16194

Yup that's the prgramming card you need. You can either buy from Horizon Hobby or OSE. They both have them for the same price.

That charger will work fine. You will need a power supply or marine battery for it though. If you buy a power supply make sure it puts out enough wattage so that you can take advantage of the chargers 200watt 10amp ability.

* If you are on a budget, I have read guys having good luck with this charger and you won't need a power supply. Only good for 50 watts but that's ok, just takes a little longer to chare a battery. Most AC/DC chargers are 50 watts: http://www.hobbyhot.com/gt-power-dua...-1-pr-905.html

If you are ordering batts from HK, grab yourself some of the 5.5mm bullets the sale. Change out the small bullets that connect the motor with the esc and change the deans. Will give you a much more reliable setup that way!

Cool! I didnt know the charger I mentioned ran off of 12 volts. I have a 12 volt regulator thatI can plug a car cell phone charger into or a ciggerette lighter into. It also has the positive and negative poles. Will this work???????

If not, I'll get one that runs off 110.

I'll probably get the turnigy batteries from hobby king because of price and your reccomendations.

how long does it take the 50 watt charger to charge a lipo battery like the ones that were mentioned???

thanks again!!!!!

It may work, not sure though. I never read or tried it.

It will take a little over 1 hr per battery.
