I'm looking for Cat hull plans somewhere in the 42" range. I'm new to boating hobby and would like to start a scratch build. Any help or pointers in right way would be awesome! thanks!

There are free plans out there for a boat called the maxcat, never built it but there are some build threads out there for it. Supposed to be a good running boat. No personal experience with it though, never seen one in person.

thanks SH! As this will be my first build, what would be a good size hull for me to start with? What kind of wood? What size motor/ESC/battery combo would be good with this?

Never scratch built a cat but have built a number of scale hydros, I mostly use 1/8 and 1/16" light ply for the structure, 1/4" for transoms on the bigger boats.
I'd look at something about 36", good size for a pair of 6s 4 or 5000mah batteries run in parallel and maybe a leopard 4092 somewhere around 1300kv or so, a T-180 esc would work but you would be at the voltage limits, a high voltage esc may be a better option but expensive.
If you go around 42" you are looking at an 8s setup to keep it reliable, then it costs a lot more for everything from chargers to servos.
My personal preference is for boats around 30-32" running 4s setups, I just find it to be a very cost effective size to run. The hydros are a little bigger but they have lower drag so draw less amperage, they are 1/10 scale.
My dream is a 1/8 scale boat, going to have to budget over 1000 for that build.

A pair of the 3700 mah packs would be good, you would need to make up a parallel adapter using the connectors you choose.
Getting up around that size with a 4074 or 4082 I'd run a 2000-2200kv motor and a t-180 esc. Depending on how well it's set up you should see at least high 50 mph with that setup, a bit more once you get it dialed in. Start with about a 42mm prop for the first runs until you get the CG and strut setting right then you can probably go up to about 45mm, but keep an eye on the temperatures.
That should be a very reliable setup with enough overhead on the esc to allow for a few first run setup mistakes. Many people have used that exact setup on cats about 36" with great success.
Some of my 4s boats use a pair of 4s 4000mah packs in parallel, smaller ones like my Motley crew I run a pair of 2s 5000mah packs in series, much smaller boat and motor though.
My stuff is all setup to run about 3-3.5 minutes, about race length, any longer and the heat starts to build up, could easily go down on prop size, lose a bit of speed and get longer runtimes.
For the batter adapter most guys solder two sets of battery connectors to the battery leads of the esc, then connect both sets of + and - leads from the batteries to the esc. SOme brands of high amp esc come with two sets of battery wires from the factory for this.
Either the Swordfish 200 or T-180 esc are pretty popular, in our group we've had no issues with either. There is also Castle if you have deep pockets, but top end escs!
I'd also go with Leopard motors, there is another type available now called TP, lately I've been reading about people having issues with the rotors.

The plans are for a 34" hull if memory serves,you can either take the files to a printers or print seperate sheets and tape together which is tricky but doable.Ill post a pic of a 70" hull someones made from these plans its awesome.
