Default EP1 tunnel project

This is my first project into the world of electric boats. I recently aquired an AquaCraft EP1 electric motor from the bass boat. The original 27 turn motor was removed and replaced with a higher revving brushed cousin, an LRP fusion phase 5 Vampire. Rewired with 12 gauge wire, everything fits nice and snug back under the beautiful engine cover, with the water cooling setup. The original 2 motor screws and gasket were used. Octura props X430, X432 and X435 fit the EP1 pretty well. I figured I would have to replace the plastic prop and will have to experiment to find the best setup. I recently finished building a wooden Dumas 3.5 Sprint and converted it to electric and put the EP1 on the back. The motor is allowed about 4mm up down movement and can move forward/back and is bolted on with 4 screws. The transom of the Dumas is wood, so I cut out an aluminum transom plate and bolted that on the inside for added security. Plan to run 6 or 7 NiMH cells. The batteries can slide up and down in the Dumas for CG. I placed a 12v cooling fan in front of the esc and have it hooked up to a 9v battery up the front. It works well and I hope I am not doing anything wrong in regards to that setup. I have not had the chance to run this boat yet, but I have it connected. It is as loud as a vacuum cleaner at full power & blows the blinds at 5 feet with authority. It looks the part and I hope it hauls & planes! It is lighter than my .21 tunnel too. Thanks for reading my spiel and I hope I don't burn a hole in my Dumas or EP1. I am old and fragile, so if this has been written before, I apologize, but boaters are nice people.

See ya
Peter

Great looking boat. My only comment is regarding the ESC cooling fan. It's not going to do much good when you seal the hatch. Even if you had a working snorkle scoop for fresh air intake, your fan is sitting right in front of the battery pack which will create a lot of heat on their own. Water cooling is the only way to go for ESC's. Get (or make) a water cooled heatsink instead. You'll be happier.

Nice set-up. I have the same outboard that I was planning on using on my Academy Supreme F-1 tunnel. Keep us updated on how it runs and which prop that you find works the best.

Thanks for the comments. I plan on installing a proper boat esc one day when $ permits. One that can take 6 - 30 cells. Has anyone else out there ran the EP1 setup like this? Re: 6/7 or more cells, hot motor 8 - 15 turn, on a tunnel running the prop 1/2 out of the water? Care to share your results/tips? I will post my results soon of performance.

Thanks
Peter

Hi,

How does putting the batteries so far forward work. Seem the CG may be a little far forward.

How does the driveline hold up?

Peter/10x8 the stock motor in this outboard has a extra long shaft to keep things aligned. How did you compensate for this?

Sorry for the long delay. I returned the motor to stock, as the LRP motor was to powerful for direct drive. Basically it was a disaster. I think the motor was too low? Boat accelerated and got onto the plane like a champion, but then just bogged down and cavitated. To be honest, i have not had much time to set it up right.
Pagemaster/Steven - In answer to your question: I attached the brass collet/drive dog at the extreme end of the LRP motor shaft. I noticed the 2.5 mile long shaft on the stock can and compensated for it. I ran a PC series unlimited speed control fine with 7.2v nimh, but it cut out with 8.4v. I returned the stock motor and put the 50000+rpm donk into an old tamiya 4wd gtr. I have been concentrating on r/c bikes and 1/8 on road, but I'll get around to running/testing again I have added some photos of the Tamiya dack dack with LRP, the TT bike and Shock and bobbos's new CEN totally worked elec jet ski & his Gadget with Graupner setup.

Default RE: EP1 tunnel project

Gday again I am back. For awhile there I was preverted into nitro bikes and fast 1/8 scale onroads. Well boats and shiny propellers have seen me return.
The tunnel has had a face lift. Now features RC-Hydros Victory esc, Lightning 700 neo X can, REK drive and TP 2100 4s lipo, water cooled motor/esc & O.S. prop 42mm.
Goes really well now. Does a mono off the start and scoots along very quickly and sits still on the plane no worries. First turns just spun completely around. We set the throw on the steering down to 30% which was plenty. Back out and turning with authority at speed. Really happy.
A few things: We ran 4s lipo when we should have been running a 4s2p. The battery got pretty warm. PLUS, we were running a 42mm prop when we should have started with a 38 or 40. We set the Hydro to stop @ approx 12.8v as well, thanks Andy. The boat is not fitted with recovery pads and the angle of the outdrive is a tiny bit lowered. While it looks absolutley realistic doing its mono starts we ended up hurling the boat into the water like the pros to lower massive amp draw/battery abuse. The lipo pack is right up the front of the boat as it is very light. Boat has 21g of lead in the nose too.
This has been a fun project and I now find myself mimicking the layout of the TS2 into the Dumas. I applied a thin layer off glass to the bottom back third of the tunnel and got it really smooth and square, massivly reinforced transom with ply and thin ali sheet. Some props arrived yesterday from Andy and we are going to try this weekend, x1440. They look Awesome. Funny thing: Tried sharpening a x440, spent 1 hour with fine sandpaper, autosol, dremel etc. Boat run: Rolled it first corner lol. So much for my prop sharpening skills!!!
Sorry to be so long and I hope you like the end result. Next is brushless TS2... Hmmm
Edit: I used black contact for the window. Made a paper template then traced onto the adhesive contact. Also, if you choose to mount the motor raised like this, you can get 2.5 cm spacers from Jaycar(electronics shop in Australia) for $3. Aluminum for face plate can also be purchased there cheap. FYI.
Bye
Peter
PS - So as not to ruin the EP-1 thread, I put the Titan 14v into that for something, someday????

All your projects look cool, from the bike to 1/8 on road to the TS2 to the EP1. Excellent work on all areas

There is a video of a BL TS2 on another tunnel thread.
There does not seem to be a MAC .21 outboard on your TS2 so convert it.

lol , thanks Ryan. Mac attack eh? On the to do list. Hopefully the electric boats will be getting a run a Sat arvo. I'll shoot some vid too and try to get it on here or rcgroups by Sunday night. Every time we take the video camera, something will go wrong. When I do not take it, things are often perfect?

Cool, sounds just about right.

EDIT - Here is that sweet TS2 close to MAC attack speeds

I would be really interested to see the inards of that TS2. How it is setup, location of esc, battery, reciever, length of cables etc? Thanks for that vid.
Anyway, here's a short vid of a MAC .21 powered tunnel to compare to the electric version. Maybe a 2215 BAM would do the job? I don't think I could get the EP1 to these speeds though, lol. It was a very windy day.[:@]

I would like to see a better video of that MAC .21. That gas(?) mono looked pretty sweet. Were they going to race? [sm=drowning.gif]

I'm not too sure what kind of electric power would compare to the MAC .21. Maybe the same set up as the video I posted with more cells.

Unfortunately thats all the vid I have of that particular MAC powered tunnel. It is at the Penrith Regatta Centre on a practice day. They did not race that day, just belting around. Everytime the tunnels race, I'm either preoccupied or doing something else???[>:] It is a shame it flipped on its first lap though.
We will be going to Manly dam today to test out an electric mono and my electric tunnel. I would lerv to bring a nitro tunnel to film running with electric boats, but they don't allow them there? They let real boats, but not nitro powered models, grrr. Safety issue I guess.
BTW - I saw a post by you somewhere regarding Precision boats. I think their site was hacked? I have not been able to log onto their site for an eternity?

I was also told their site was hacked. I had the question on three different sites until I got an answer. It seems like Mark Hopper of HTBboats is starting to stock quite a bit of stuff. I need to get a few things for my .45 tunnel before next season.

Anyway let me know how the electro performs. Take lots of video and pictures for me!

Would a mamba 7700 motor work in on this boat? Which brushless motor would be the best. Ive been thinking about doing the same project.

Use a 550L or XL. I'd recommend 8-12L/XL.

A 7700Kv motor would have a prop so small you might not even be able to see it.
