need ideas- Kyosho Jet Arrow
Hey everyone. I am new to the boating scene (I mainly do electric cars/trucks) and am looking for some upgrades for my boat. It's a Kyosho Jet Arrow. I just "inherited" it from my dad because he got a Kyosho Twin-Storm. I'd like to make the Jet Arrow competitive with the Twin-Storm so that we can race! The first thing that's gotta go is the ON-OFF switch throttle control. An ESC would be a must have IMO. I'd also like to get a new motor for it. Any motor suggestions? I'd like to have it water-cooled and perhaps I could tie the ESC into the water cooling too if it's compatible. Thanks in advance for your help, I really appreciate it.

Ok I found where I can get all the stuff I need to make the water cooling work (offshoreelectrics.com)
I just need some suggestions for a motor and ESC. I want this thing to be fast but not too expensive. Thanks

Hi
To go as fast as a Twin storm you need about 20mph. The Jet Arrow can do it, but it will cost more than you want . You could go to seven to eight cells and a pro boat esc. A trinity Monster Max wild motor would drop right in too. The stock prop has to go . A Graupner K42 CF prop would be about right . I hope not too big for that motor. . It's a big boat for a 550- 600 sized motor. The only saveing thing here is that it has a very lightly made hull for its size. n.h.schmidt

Thanks for the info I will look at the things you mentioned. [sm=thumbup.gif]
What about the standard E-maxx motor, the titan 550... I know it won't be as fast as the trinity monster maxx. Is it a decent boat motor though?

I say drop a 700sc motor from offshore in it and a jeti 600 esc and 14 cells. Also to save space you can get a flat receiver pack and move it into the radio box, you will also need the flex coupler kit from off shore and a prop. That will blow your dads twin storm away
PS your dad should have given you the twinstorm.

No, I was talking more like the Aquajet set up. The 700 motor will be big, so you will need a short flex coupler to connect the end of the motor to the shaft, this is the smoothest way to do it. You will have a smoother ride than your dad because his set up has inherent problems, like vibration and ware. Whenever possible avoid setups that have the drive going through the rudder. he will eventually have problems with it wearing out.

LAst year I got a Jet Arrow and started a new thread as the title - Show me your Jet Arrow - you might get some good ideas from that - do a search. The Johnson motors do more than the Marine Titans - look at the recent post on the Villain 27 MPH thread - those go for about $9 + Shipping on Ebay. I think the Jetti is maybe out of your price range - ya I know it's good for 30 cells - or I guess you could say good for 10 pounds worth of cels - hahah but maybe the pro boat esc would be better - only $40 and can handle 10 cells

I'll check out that thread. I've got a duratrax streak in one of my cars that don't use too much anymore. maybe that will be useful.

Don[t get an ESC that won't handle atleast 12 cells. That boat obviously has enough room for 12 cells. Especially if you get a good 700 motor. The 700 won't run good on anything less than 12 cells and even better on 16 cells.

What about a 550 motor? will that run ok on a decent 7-cell pack? I want to go with something that doesn't take so many batteries so I can keep the boat light.

RE: need ideas- Kyosho Jet Arrow
Here's the latest with my Jet Arrow.
For the ESC setup, (I'm planning on using a duratrax Streak ESC) will air cooling be enough? I have a small novak cooling fan and I was thinking about mounting it over the ESC.
I'm still debating what motor to put in. I've got a titan 550 motor laying around and I might use it at least temporarily.
The receiver that's in the boat right now is probably coming out.
I'm going to use either my futaba 2PL (AM) or my JR XS3 (fm synthesized) radio in the boat. The Futaba rx is much smaller(and it wouldn't be as much of a loss if it gets wet[&:]) , so I'm leaning toward that.

RE: need ideas- Kyosho Jet Arrow
Now the boat is gutted out. getting ready to set things up. Does anyone use a small cooling fan on their ESC? I'm trying to figure out how I want to mount a mini Novak fan over the ESC. It's already a tight fit even without the fan. (using duratrax streak ESC, FYI)
I ordered a cooling coil to go around the motor, once that arrives, I'm going to figure out what to do for the motor cooling (water pick up, etc.)

Unless you plan on introducing a vent in the hull for fresh air, after a short period you will only be circulating hot air, especially in the summer. Thats why everyone uses the most readily available and most effiecent coolant, which is water.
