well this is my first post, so hello, I'm currentlt buildning a Villain IV(first edition), with a gruapner jet drive, it will be powered by a trinity montster 27 turn motor with a Tekin marine ESC and 12 cells in series. Will also be completely water cooled. Ive had the boat for 12 yrs now, and I built a jet boat out of toy, 15" long about 8 yrs ago and decided to combine the two. I will post pictures, but so far ive gutted the villain and prepped the jet drive, Soon maybe tommorow Ill very carefully make the transplant. I'm a bit nervous but have it all planned out. A lot of grinding and fiberglassing is in order. In the pic the tamiya hummer is awiting parts, namely the main gears.The 100z is a toy car but im modifying that as well. I use fatuba radios.

that should be great! which jetdrive did you get? if its bigger than the mini-jet, i think you need motor bigger than standard 05/540. possibly 600 or 700 size.

if you havn't already bought the jet drive go check out jet-drive.de they have some good jets. I think they are less toyish than the graupner jet.

i think the motor you want to put in isnt the motor that will work for it
try mabey like a 700 or a 600 it will rip , cool idea

well, its the standard graupner jet drive. The boat the drive was previously in, hit 25mph (on 7 cells), but the hull was far to small. Which made the boat heavy and vulnerable to waves. This hull should be perfect. As of now, I'm going to use the trinity motor, with no gear reduction, as this setup worked fine in the old boat. Recently I havent had much time to work on the project, however I have worked on the drive unit itself to smooth out the inlet better. I'll try to post some close up pics of all the parts soon, but just wanted to update.

I will consider buying a 700BB, at this point though, I just want it to run. The trinity motors originally were in the villian IV, it really moved, after blowing several props trying to run the boat on a river were debris often is, I looked into jet drives, built the small jet boat, I wanted to put the jet in the villian, but at the time just couldnt bring myself to taking out those nice arneson drives. It was also neat having a jet drive meant for a 30" boat in an 18" toy boat, but not practical......so here we go

well as an update things are attached to the boat now lol. building has gone without a hitch. I hate to say it but I used bondo, specifically bondo short stand fiberglass. Stuff actually is great, cures in about 3 minutes, and is really strong. I made the delta out of cardboard, super glued it in and bondo'd it from both sides. I used the original villain motor mount but modified it to work backwards (the motor is where the transmission should be. I'm in the process of fabricating an intake grate, using 1/8" acrylic and aluminum plate. So far the boat weighs far less than either of the boat the parts came from. Next is steerring, planning on using the villain steering hardware to some extent.

Remember things are not complete yet, and I know the bondo is ugly, it takes some time to pretty it up, besides the interior is getting a lot more mounting shelves and such. Also I assure you the bottom edges are completely sharp, the bondo just hides it. I cant wait to paint, but Im not painting at all, till this thing hits the water for the first time.

I am considering a jet for a Nitro Vee that I am converting to electric, I think the boats are about the same size, mine might be a little bigger. Would this drive still work?

What about on a Nitro boat? I have another Nitro Vee with a 3.3 in it, a jet drive would be a killer mod if it could perform and handle the power.

well, you can get graupner jet-drives from hobby-lobby online, I've wondered about nitro too, but I think you need a heavier duty drive for nitro, graupner makes like 5 dif. drives, one of them I know is meant for glow engines, but the heavier duty ones are huge.

I've made a bit of progress, I put back the original inner hull, modified my radio tray though I still need to cut my steering servo hole. The steering linkage is assembeled and I installled a water pick-up on the drive itself. All thats left is finishing the steering, a bit of plumbing and soldering.

The new pics show the rest of the drive installed, I wont be using reverse, but the steering nozzle is there.

being this is kind of an experimental boat, I wouldnt go installing jet-drives in your villains just yet, I'm really hoping to see what this thing can do in the next few days, then I guess we'll know whether this was a good idea .

Ha ha, I had the same problem! I had my hull in primer for a week. Finally, I just went to my LHS, picked out a bright color and painted it. I normally would never have chosen that color, but it turned out great!

hey quicksiler, im getting my boat thursday, i just got gp 3300s for it. i hope u find a good color scheme, i was think of using all white, then just making templates and make stripes and what not. have fun painting it. tell me how it goes.

well painting might be soon, I'm finally done building, she runs, and will be on the water within an hour. Dont worry I'm bringing my camera.

hopefully the water fittings, drive, esc, connections, steering or anything else I made parts for holds up.

13 days is probably the fastest I've done something like this.

well, she ran.......pretty nice, had a battery dump out on me in the middle of the pond, which had me waiting about an hour for it to get close enough to wade out. The boat handles better than the original villain imo, right now goes about the speed of a stock villain IV....I need a bigger motor, and more power. I can tell this will be a nice boat, its just gonna take a bit more money. so heres some pics, I'm gonna try to get my video uploaded too.

Nice! I have a Nitro Vee hull on the way, and now you've got me shopping for a jet drive!

You might keep in mind that speed isn't exactly one of the biggest/best characteristics of a jet drive. Got to keep the intake in the water, you know, and a planing hull might not do that.

actually doc the impeller didnt cavitate once, I couldnt get it out of the water, the old boat the hardware came from, flew around like a jet ski.....I think I've got a couple factors limiting my speed, one a well used trinity car motor, only 6 cells, and my intake wasnt completely finished off, since I wanted to have a baseline to follow, thjat baseline was this run. I do know jet-drives arent the fastest drives, but this thing is definitely not near as fast as it will be. Also that area I was in, was infested with algae and weeds. was only a test, I very happy I didnt see any chine walking, porpoising or anything of the like looks like a real boat....btw my next post will have the video of the run.
