Default depron rigger- homemade

im nearly finished my small vee and thought i'd like a little rigger to go with it!
i've always liked the renegade rigger but not ever gonna have the ££ to buy it!
then i saw GHOST 2 and thought that really goes so i'd have a go at a renegade style one but its got to be scratch built.

So far i've ordered a BL motor 3400Kv outrunner
20c 2200 lipo
and depron i already have
i've gone for a 14" tub with 6 1/2" sponsens
got to make the strut and rudder-in 0.031" brass probably
i ve added a few pictures of my progress so far the sponsens arnt glued on yet.
how much water clearance should i look for under the tub area or at the back by the strut??

the sponsens are 4 layers of 6mm depron layered up and 2 layers to give the angled outer face(sanded to shape) and then skinned with 0.8mm ply
the tub so far is just 6mm depron- maybe i'll skin that with ply as well?

Well a bit of a jump forward but shes nearly finished!
just a nose section to make and fit
some pics -any suggestions on the strut setup starting places??
and maybe i'll skin the sides with ply to?
all up weight is just a touch over 1lb
hope to give it a run really soon!
------------------
Right just took it out!
first run went GR8!!!!! up on plane and ran nice -good turns -although the front end did hop up and down a bit
thought i'd adjust the strut to see if that would make a difference?
changed the angle and put it back out- i little better
adjusted once more- put it back in and throttle...a squeal from the tub and crackling noise-uh ooh!
opened it up and the tub was full of water! and smoke!!
AAAGGGHHHHHHHH!!!
Fried the ESC AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![:@]
the tub doesnt leek so the only place it can be coming in is up the stuffing tube?
gonna have to see about siliconing the ends on the esc next time- or is there another way to waterproof them with putting them in a seperate tub??
Ebay here we come again! have to sneek a buyitnow in b4 the wife sees!

cool rigger. I am currently fnishing the hull of my first homemade rigger. How fast does your rigger go? Do you have a cover for your rigger or do you just run it like in the pictures?

O didnt get emails for your replys -sorry guys!
Brad -i run it with 1/32 ply covers taped on-gonna change 1 to clear perpex so its easy to check if water is getting in
right a small update
after frying my first ESC and replacing it with a bigger one ....and then killing that on the first run AAH!!(filled with water OOPS!)
i finally got some new one's!! multiple!!
i also got some different props but i think im still not getting it right
i tried an octura 2035 and the motor has plenty of power to push it!(things get a bit warm though)
so much infact that the front sponsen(not the turn fin side) leaves the water and with prop torque tries to spin the rigger over[&:]
still getting the bouncing
i have the COG at about 1" behind the turn fin
i have also tried an octura 1435 and then i cut that down to 1430 but now its not enough to lift the back end up
so what im asking is ..

whats the best all round prop to get started off with on a 3/16 shaft
----------
I didnt get any suggestions []so i ordered a X637[&:]
i hope that will do a better job than what i currently have
thats the smallest prop i can get on my 3/16(.187") shaft but i can always size it down a bit i spose?

i've also added some rear sponsens to help get the rear end up quicker
gotta hit the right spot soon i hope!!
i'lll up some pics of it if that would help give some ideas on setting it up[]

HELP PLEASE!!
im lost and need some ideas!
i just cant get this rigger to get up off the water
setting up the prop and strut im doing by guess work[&:]
could really do with someone who's in the know running through it if they have time
i think im really close but keep missing the sweet spot
my ESC keeps cutting out - im not sure on the amp pull of my motor -sposed to be 23amp pull and i have a 30 amp esc on it
but maybe not with the prop choice i have

First off how much does your boat weigh with the battery in it ?
Well this is my set-up on my Renagade Rigger .
My CG is even with the end of the turn fin.
Prop shaft depth 1/2" down from the transom.
Prop angle, prop tilted down about 1 degree.
Running an X632 prop. (not plastic shown in picture)
Little Booger FLYS !

Ah looks nice an' fast! just wot im after! lol
i'll get the scaes and go weigh it and i'll post up a few pics to go with it
maybe its something really fundamental that i've done wrong?
just wondering what sort of height clearance you have from the bottom of the sponsens to the underside of the tub
yours looks like it will be high off of the water?
i know i dont have all the best gear but surely i could get it moving to have at least a small amount of WOW to it! lol
thanks for the reply

p.s what size motor is yours running?

Thanks
Graham
------
right just weighed it
its 1 lb 5 oz with batt(600 grams)-i think the renegade is about 13oz? so mines heavy then
and 15 3/4oz no batt(450 grams)
its a 3S lipo 2200 Mah
CoG is about 3/4 inch behind the back edge of the turn fin

The measurement from the bottom of the back of the sponsons to the bottom of the tub is 5/8".
I'm running the 400 DF motor 2600kv 15amps . I run EVERYTHING Steve recommends on his site http://www.bizingo.com/m/renegade%20riggers/
Yes your is kind of heavy. Mine is 14 oz with the battery, I added 1 oz of weight to make it more stable.

i had a quick measure of mine at the transom and it was a bit less than that... but then i realised that the bottom of my tub is slightly rounded
i think whats happening is its bottoming out in the middle and dragging in the water
i've dropped the strut WAY down and hopefully give it a try
also gonna try a 30mm prop on it-i have 2 types i can use
the motor seems to cut out at full throttle for some reason?? if you stop and then open the throttle again it will go again! maybe its just pulling to many amps with the bigger prop on- an octura 2035?? not sure yet
or could it be that the battery cant supply enough power

the motor im running is a D2632 turborix- excuse the make!![] 23 amp 3400Kv
its a fair size motor! so it should push it!

You may need a couple of REAR sponson to lift the back, especially with the curve you have in the bottom of the tub. I put two on mine and it really helps, also tracks straighter too. (Not shown in my old pictures) The bottom of my tub is flat.
They go on the bottom see pictures.
The drag of not getting up on plane maybe overloading the speed control also.

Thanks Ralph i've done just that!!
i read on one of your posts somewhere that you had fitted rear sponsens even though the pics didnt show it
the new pic you took is gr8!
Q. are the rear sponsens better longer or would shorter be ok still? only i made them sized like they showed on some other plans i had but i could see longer would give a slow gradual lift??
maybe i'll give the ones i have a try and if that improves anything then change to longer ones!

Much appreciate the advice

Graham

arent you just supposed to angle the prop down a bit to lift the back of the boat? if its flat you cant expect the back to get any higher than water level.

Try the short one first, they should work. You can always change to longer ones.
You can't change the prop angle TOO much as the front sponsons are not adjustable (on mine). If you lift the rear too much you will need to redo the angle of attack of the front sponsons (hard to do when not adjustable).

might end up making another with a 400 size motor and lighter!
im finding it hard to match up motors to prop sizes on brushless though- got no ideas where you start [&:]
oh well its all fun
i'll report back on how it goes

Well that definatley made a difference!!!!!!
or at least it will when i run it with my 20c-30c lipo in it!
i think thats why its cutting out all the time -just cant handle the amp draw ...or the lipo's knackered![&:]
but even with a 5-6 sec burst it jumps up on to plane now!
i think i'll try messing with props around the 30 mm size
so i've modded the batt case to take the bigger lipo!! just need a run now!

I used Loctite glue 603 i think or maybe it was 638! they are both similar only one allows for unclean(slightly) metal
rub up both pieces with some wet and dry paper- roll a coil up to sand inside the shaft- and then put a few drops in the shaft hole and slide the cable in
wipe away the excesss if theres any and then lay it down to dry
all done!!
not had any come loose in use - have had 1 ripped apart when my .40 nitro vee hit a blanket floating in the water! but the shaft and prop got stuck in the blanket so i retreived it- cleaned it up - and stuck it back in! been fine ever since!!
