RE: the official traxxas villain thread ! good info !
I just got my villain this past winter. I haven't been able to take it out yet as the weather has been so bad but I can't wait! Any ideas on some good upgrades to do first?

Read throu this thread and you will get all the info you need, but again...
Do you have the Villain IV, 7,2 or the EX? It matters what version and what upgrades possible

RE: the official traxxas villain thread
If you happen to read this I need help!! I have the stock 30 turn RS-540S like you said you used to have. How fast did yours go with those motors. Mine seems extremely slow (about 5-8mph) and I don't know if the xl-1 is shot or if that is the speed of these motors. Also, if I were to get new motors, what would be a relatively inexpensive but high-performance pair? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

If you are to change the ESC to a new one I could easily recommend the Orion Method R V2 series as a substitution for the stingers.
I have a pair of 19t and it is really fast. I overtake an Villan EX with 7.2v in mine like nothing...
And the ESC i am using can take the beating of a pair of 12t with 8.4v....so I can get speed in it like that!

Thanks for the info! I will definately be going with the Stingers for now and will probably be upgrading to that esc sometime in the future.

RE: the official traxxas villain thread
After running one of these awesome little boats for a while now all I can say is that they are an awesome boat and very reliable.
For those of you that are new.
Get good batteries 3800Mah or more!
Leave it alone
Modding it with different motors and stuff is a waste of time!
Keep this one as a fun boat or a pusher for your gasser or other electrics.
Get motor coolers they are a must if you are going to run all day.
They save the motors big time from that nasty heat factor that kills these little cheepo motors.
A better radio is helpfull but for those of you who are one budgets is not a requirement right away.
The better battery you run the happier you will be with this boat.
Lube the drive shafts with a heavier oil like 1000 wt diff fluid it saves the bushings.
Grease the bushings inside the gear housing at the top of the drive shaft with a good quality cable grease for gas boats.
This will save those bushings from needing replaced after about 50 runs.(they are a pain)to fix.
Other then that run the boat keep it lubed as I said and have fun.
And for those who are new also
NEVER SWIM FOR A FLIPPED BOAT!
get a raft and wear a life jacket!

Even so there are quite a few good options for those who wants to go faster!
Nice tips as well!

That was my point that the boat is not worth putting a bunch of money into unless you really want something to mess with.
There are pleanty of fiber glass options out there for the same money that one would have modding this boat.

RE: the official traxxas villain thread
Indeed there are, but I think that not many of them handle the rough water like the villain.
If you just want pure speed, I would buy a supervee 27 for example.
But I totally get your point and agree.
But if for any reason the motors of ESC gives up...then it is another thing, because upgrades are usually cheaper than stock replacements from Traxxas.
I bought a trashed Villain IV a year ago for $30 with a broken reciver and ESC, and later on got a hold of a Novak SuperDuty with twin 19t engines from Orion for $55
Now I have tremendous speed for a low price, not new but still

RE: the official traxxas villain thread
Had 2 older 3800 bats only a year old melt a hole in my buddies battery tray yesterday.
So any of you running this boat with older cheaper batteries make sure you check them about half way into the run.
I can see this being a problem with cheaper cells.
These boats are very hard on batteries as it is.

RE: the official traxxas villain thread
If you are running this boat with no Motor coolers on it be careful with the temps on the batteries.
Bring the boat in as soon as the batteries lose a slight bit of power and check them for heat.
They will be very hot at this point.

I tore everything out and I think I am going to sort of redo it. I will probably be getting water cooling. Also what do you think about getting stinger motors and graupner u-joints and new props? I'm not going to upgrade the xl-1 right now so if you can think of any faster motors than the Stingers let me know.

If you are running stock ESC, do not think of getting another set of engines.
However the Graupner u-joints have less friction that stock so get those. New props is also fine but will not add any value to stock configuration but will make a diffrence when upgrading. Watercooling is a GREAT ide, just do it!

Sounds good! How much do the carbon fiber props go for as opposed to the ex props and is it worth the difference between them?

The carbon props are expensive.
www.offshoreelectrics.com
I believe they are around 100 bucks.
THis is why my Villian stays stock and I run a Supervee when I want fast electric.

Running the 23t titan on one battery will be quite slow. They are made for the higher voltage like 14.4v.
If this an original Villian IV then the silver canned motors aren't 20t stingers, because the stinger wasn't made back then. (early 90's) I believe they were considered 27t or even 30t (slow at either rate) And the red esc with big heat sinks on it couldn't take much more motor than the stockers.

Ihave to be honest here this boat is slow no matter what you throw at it.
Unless you are willing to spend the price of another boat on it.
This boat is awesome for what it is.
A play boat that is super stable and a return your gas boat retrieval boat.

Kahnen, if you do not know whether or not your IV is original, is there a way to tell the difference between the original motors and the stingers???

Well, I know that they also upgraded this boat to the stingers but I don't know how old mine is. Heres a picture if this helps...
