convert hobbystore viper to water jet power
Hi all, not sure if I am doing this right, hope someone will tell if it is wrong. before sending this model to davy jones locker, where it belongs, I thought of fitting a water jet to the hobbystore model called Viper, there are 2 models , mine is the larger of the 2 , approx. 42" long and 19" wide. while it is quite light in weight it is long. my question is does anyone think this is possible and if so what jet would they recommend if you think I am wasting my time please let me know, and this thing will be heading to the pool with some extra holes in it,, regards Keith

Thought i'd revive this thread as this started on a Traxxas boat turned into a jet drive, I thought i'd reintroduce it into a new traxxas jet drive.
I'm building a Traxxas Spartan into a Jet drive as i got a empty hull for $20 which was a awesome deal.
I've consulted with members on OE forum and decided that the best way to do this is to make a flat section for the jet drive as the boat is a deep V. Here's the cut i will make:
I've added another inch to the chamfer (triangle part) since i dont think 3" of chamfer is enough so the final cut will be 9 inches long, 2 inches wide (since the jet drive inlet is 40mm wide), and has a 4" chamfer. I will be filling the cut with a carbon fiber plate that i have on the way. I'm doing carbon fiber mainly cause it looks great. It also will be able be stronger and thinner and i found the stuff for a good price.
I plan to use a jet drive built by mickieb from OE.
it's a 30mm jet unit with a 3 blade cnc machined impellar. The nozzle is fully adjustable. I plan to install a turnbuckle to fine tune the trim. I will be using a Venom v500 outrunner and a vxl-6s esc. No one that i know has paired this motor and esc and i feel that its over-kill for the motor but it's worth a shot. I plan to run 4s (2s in series). I will be giving you a few photo's as i make the mods and give yall some running videos. I live around a lot of water but i wont be running rapids until later next month possibly.

This may be some help. When making the delta that will lead the water into the hull, remove a sliver from the center so when you 'fold' them in they will make a flat section. I hope my crude pics will help. Then when done, just reinforce the back with a layer of fiberglass. I did this with a cheapo NQD boat when installing a Powerjet drive and it worked out well.

Thanks for the info but instead of just folding in the delta area, i will place carbon fiber in that section as well. The plate came in friday but ill do the cuts if i have time today and do the install. Getting a good size check today so i'll probably go ahead and order the jetdrive tomorrow maybe.

As such, my suggestions would be as follows:
-motor: Brushless 3660 to 3670 type, preferably 4-pole, a 2-pole with good quality neodymium magnets will work too (say, the big, Robitronic 3670 1/8 platinums). Watercooling is mandatory!
-Kv: about 2200 to 3000 max for 2s (3000kv needs a 80+ amp ESC!!) 1500 to 1800 for 3s, 1100 to 1500 on 4s. Rpm under load should be around 20000r/pm for this 28mm jet. Anything above that, will just make a lot of impressive noise, and cavitate.
-ESC : Any 80 to 120 amp watercooled brushless esc should do. I've run brushless boats with car ESC's with a watercooling block McGuyver'd to the cooling fins. Works like a charm, bit expensive, though. Specialized, high-amp, high voltage boat ESC's (mostly plane or heli-ESC's with watercooling strapped to it's FET's) are much more affordable -and lighter- than the programmable, but big&heavy, marvels that current-gen 1/8 car ESC's are.
-lipo: minimal 30c for 2s, and 25c for 3s and 4s. The Kehrer gobbles amps like nothing else, because a jet has a constant load, contrary to f.i. surface-piercing drives, who's load often goes to half of the original, when finally on plane. When using too low c-values on a jet, Your packs wíll puff, and they are ready for the bin.
Don't skimp on the wiring! At least 14gauge, but 12gauge is preferable, though a tad harder to solder with any iron below 80watts. Too thin wires will heat-up and soldered joints will come loose, believe me!
search for "seamonster brushless" for the cheaper motors with integrated watercooling. Size múst be 36mm diameter, otherwise the adapter won't fit.
I run my modded NQD wavechopper with a 28mm kehrer and a 2700kv watercooled 3660. The purple variation of the Seamonster, connected to a watercooled (!) 60 amp marine esc of undetermined make. As far as amps go, I'm really pushing it there.
on 2s 30c cells, it flies, on 3s it's completely mad, but starts cavitating at 100% throttle, plus the amps went through the roof.
(My sensible advise, though, would be to stick to 3s or 4s on something like a 1800kv 3660 motor. 2200kv if you want mad, instant acceleration, and don't mind the cavitation at full throttle. It'll keep the amp-draw reasonable)
Keep in mind that the Kehrer 28mm can only stand up to about 25000rpm, above that, the slightest imbalance of the prop, due to wear f.i., wil make it cavitate and vibrate, and it will hit the inside of the pump, wrecking the chamber.
don't expect record-breaking speeds, though. Jets are slower than surface-piercing props in boats. The suggested combi will get You about 30 to 40 mph in a small boat like the jetsprint, but instant accelleration! My modded Wavechopper tops-out @ 26mph on flat water. 3s makes it accelerate faster, but the topspeed remains in the low 30's due to the size&weight of the Wavechopper.
I also trimmed the Wavechopper fairly "wet" , which makes it track straighter and steer sharper in choppy water, but at a cost to top-speed.
For more speed, the jet pump should be bigger, 40mm at least.

Well, the 3974 could fit, as long as the screw-holes are 25mm apart. The 2050 is a good choice too imho if You plan on using 3s.
I mentioned the 36mm because people tend to mix-up water-cooled 28xx en 36xx motors, the can including the cooling mantle of a 28xx motor often looks like a 36xx. 28xx motors are just too feeble to power a 28mm jet. They'll burn themselves out in no-time short.
If the holes are apart more than 25mm, you probably have to purchase a separate adapter for 800-type motors from Kehrer Modellbau, and with postage to Oz, that could run as expensive as buying a new motor. Unless the holes in a 39xx are the same as in a brushed 700, which I do not know. Haven't got a 39xx around, I can't check. And I haven't used 700's in, oh, 15 years, and donated the last one to a friend, who promptly cooked it...
(the last boat I used a turbo 700 in, was a Graupner Key-Biscayne on 14 cells with a 50mm carbon hydro-prop. For a time the fastest boat in the vicinity. Sold it, and the kid who bought it, planted it in a rather solid harbour wall Yup, I warned him that 46km/h on water was pretty fast, and that braking, even with reverse, takes some time..... I believe I still got a vhs (oh, yeah, baby...) with the "Sea-Hulk". A video that starts with a nervous, but fast Graupner Cobra, then a sonorous low buzz can be heard, and the Key-Biscayne majestically overtakes the Cobra like it's standing still, Leaving it solidly in it's wake..)
The 2050, with it's 4-poles and 1800 watts is gonna be pretty darned quick on 3s, much faster than mine on 2s, and FLY on 4s. It should run pretty long on the 5000ah pack too. Just do. NOT. fully rev the boat out of the water when trying 4s. It might sound cool, like an angry F1 car, but it WILL wreck the prop and chamber of the jet. (Don't ask )

Pursuit conversion
Jay-Em, nice conversion. It's a natural for that boat. Well, I finally got started on my Pursuit conversion. I had intentions of installing a 49mm Gravitix D50 I purchased a while back, but it was too tall to fit the transom! So I fitted it for a 40mm Powerjet (used to be sold by KMB) I had laying around. The previous owner had cut off the turning vanes (they are a bit ugly) so I'll have the option of reinstalling or using a steering nozzle from a Graupner or other suitable type. The Powerjet requires you to remove quite a chunk of hull to fit. Not like most pumps which result in a hole in the transom and rectangular hole in the bottom. Heres the rough-in:

Pursuit conversion
The Powerjet was made to straddle a much thinner transom, the stator housing and pump body fitting into each other 'tongue and groove' style. But this transom is a wee bit too thick for that, so I will install it all from the outside. This will also make it easier to remove the stator housing when necessary. I should have done this with my Bat Boat conversion with the same type pump. Here are some pics after fitment:

I would have thought there would be more interest in such a conversion. Or any conversion for that matter. But then, the Powerjet is no longer available so I suppose that may be a factor. Sdg

Jets are no longer "the hot thing". Very few are still produced. Shapeles blobs with surface-drives go faster, and the kids want "the fastest", not the "technically most challenging to get right" I guess. *sigh* Such is life, until the next Hot Thing.

You may be right about 'hot thing'. Jet drive boats aren't as fast, but they can be run in shallow rivers, creeks and rapids that would ruin a prop drive right away. Much more exhilarating than just going fast! I still have an ABC Kawasaki Jet Ski that I converted to brushless. I had 3 of them but traded off the other 2. Much fun!

I know little about jet drive systems .
What size dual drives would work and were to buy as cost is a factor .
I do not want to drop a lot of $$ on these. basic scale speed would be sufficient.

Stands to reason that a pair of the 28mm KMB drives http://www.ebay.com/itm/28mm-KMB-Jet...item2588adeeae would push a boat that size to scale speeds. And the Riva Calzoni reverse buckets are similar to those on the actual Jacuzzi drives. A brace of the 49mm Gravitix drives http://www.rcnz.com/Shop/Service/Det...se_Bucket.html might push it to the actual (non-scale) speed of about 28 knots (30mph). They are about $180 but can be found on Ebay from time to time for less. Or if you have more $ to spend, you might consider a pair of these 53mm pumps from HK http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__13388__CNC_Precision_Jet_Boat_Drive_X_Large.html at about twice that price. They might be a bit much but are sexy, IMO.

Whooh! Clean! Shineyy... I always preferred anodised blue to purple.
Great news that it fits without the hassle of adapters and such. On 3s that thing's gonna fly! Keep us updated.
