Default Cessa 1882 build Pics advice needed

Attached are some pics of the hull of my ABS plastic ABC Hobby Cessa 1882, that I have had since I was a kid. I never really got the boat running well because I put it together with no supervision when I was 13 and it pretty much never ran after I melted the "Garbage" stock speed control. So now that I have gotten bit by the bug of RC electric boating many years later I want to completely scrap all the stock servos , the esc, the dual M&Y motors and do a brushless conversion. I have already done some minor work, (Deans connectors two new batteries and a new charger) also planning on reinforcing the ABS hull but need more input on the restSeeing as this is my first "gutting" of stock parts to upgrade on the boat I want to ask you guys for your expertise on proper esc, brushless, and drive system pairings that will work with this boat. I have already heard that I should scrap the crappy ABS hull and sink the money into a fiberglass hull, but I think the hull is beautiful and it has sentimental value because my uncle who recently passed bought it for me for my birthday when I was 13, and its really the only thing I have to remember him by, so I want to make it badass in his memory because he was a great guy. Therefore I would really appreciate any suggestions you more seasoned Vets have, and I apologize for how rumedial my questions might be, but we all had to start somewhere.

I will list some of my questions with photos below in another post. Thanks again fellas and I appreciate all the help.

The first area that I want to tackle is a proper drive assembly. The stock one is garbage and the dual motors with plastic gears cannot handle the strain of a brushless conversion, so I plan on running a direct drive single brushless setup. The question I have is will this drive system I found at offshoreelectrics fit this boat without major transom modification and will it fit the stock hole thats drilled in the transom where the prop drive exits. please see pics below. The orange boat is my current setup, and the yellow boat is the setup that im wondering will work or not .

I know I havent provided much detail but I can get any info on it that you request.

BTW The hull measures 36" long by 9" wide.

looks like a good plan to me. gonna need a pretty big motor, like maybe a 9xl. If you keep it light she'll be really fast. The only real problem with abs hulls is how much they flex. I dont even own a glass hull, but I have found the drawbacks of abs. I've broken my motors loose several times, really not a big deal, but it happens and the only way to get around it, is by seriously planning out reinforcement. Now in all seriousness you dont even have to. If you can deal with having to occasionally re epoxy everything in, than no biggie. I'll give you a list of how my mounts have failed.
running my 700sc powered villain in a 1ft chop(she kept running, didnt know till I took the top off)
700sc powered villain jet boat, kind of ran it over a very solid rock at 20mph.
same boat, jumped a dock and t-boned it on a piling.

As you can see, it's not a big deal.

btw, I used to have that same esc, finally crapped out on me last year, after 10yrs of service. good unit!

Nice boat! Like others have posted that orange is a great color. I am also new to boating and my build is way more basic than yours. Looks like you know what your doing. Keep posting pics of the rebuild.

Now to try and anwser your question. First you need to know the size of the hole and the size of your drive shaft and any new shaft might need to be cut down to fit.

thanks alot for the responses fellas. I emailed Steve Vaccaro at offshore electrics and he said the following and i think I will go with it.

I would run the speedmaster mono system with a Feigao 10xl and hydra 120.
Speeds will be in the high 20-30mph range.
With 4s lipo, the boat will be faster. Also with lipo you will be able to
move to a larger prop, for even more speed.

But then i talked to the supervisor over at castle creations and he told me that Feigao motors burn up over time and that they recommend pairing their Hydra esc's with Neu motors. This is what he recommended off a spreadshet he had which i will try and get from him and attach to this post.

Neu motor 1527 2.5D with a hydra 120 25volts 6s lipo and an octura x450 prop.

I am still gonna do a ton more research on this because I am about to shell out a ton of cash on this and I want to make sure I dont blow anything up Haha. Thanks for the comments I agree and hopefully know you can all see why I want to get this thing up and going cause its a gorgeous boat with alot of history behind it. Thanks again for the comments.

Heres what i would do

Go for a 9 or 10 Xl as Steve says
get one of these

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...rogrammability

Which i have had for 2 years or so and watercooled, still going strong, usb programable... CHEAP as compared to a hydra
Get these lipos

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...5C_Lipoly_Pack

I have some Zippys that are the same, and I have it in a scratch built 33 inch cat... First run it did 47mph... second run after a bit of tweaking over 50mph... in oval trim for 4 mins.. batteries have never got hot

Note im running an 8xl with X440/3, Id rather use a 9xl and a bigger prop.

Driveline i would go with speedmaster and 3/16 flex cable.

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...Charge_Capable

I have this charger and use it for 2s 3s and 4s batteries, it works a treat for the price. You dont have to spend megabucks to go fast.

The Fiegaos will burn up over time, yes, but you can buy about 5 of them before your near the price of a Neu. mines 2 years old and going strong, just gets regular bearing replacements

thanks for all the advice fellas. After looking things over I think i have decided to go with the below setup. Let me know what you think and i have 2 final questions. 1. would you go with a 540 or 700 motor, and what kind of prop do i pair with the below setup. Let me know what you think.

Feigao 540 8L 3,072 RPM / Volt 5mm Shaft
Speedmaster Mono Hardware System with 150 flex cable
Octura Flex Hex Motor to Drive Shaft Couplers: 5mm x .150-Small
OSE Water Jacket for Feigao 540 sized motors
Adjustable Metal Trim Tabs
Adjustable Motor Mount 540 Size
Castle Creations Hydra 120 ESC

what batteries are you going to run ? note the 4s packs i linked to earlier i run two of them in parallel for my 8xl, just to clarify

i would not recommend that motor, I would get something with less rpm per volt or you will really limit your prop selection to smaller props. 10L maybe

My school of though : id rather get a larger motor and have it not working as hard to produce speed, and a smaller one that you have to push to the ragged edge.

Dont worry about the trim tabs, they are just drag if you have your boat setup correctly in the first place you wont need them, Concentrate on getting the lateral and longitude COG right during the build and the angle of attack can be changed via moving the strut..

Crabstick thanks for the input I was advised by steve vaccaro from ofshoreelectrics to go with the Feigao 10XL, and thats what im gonna do. Also as far as a prop im gonna start with a carbon 2317.40 prop and work up with testing. Right now im unning twin 6 cel 7.2V 4500 orion rocket packs but will be running Lipos in no time im sure. I agree with your school of thought it makes sense to get a larger motor and have it not working as hard to produce speed, and a smaller one that you have to push to the ragged edge. So here is the new setup i wanted to run past you guys before i place the order. Tell me what you think

Feigao 540 10XL 1,668 RPM / Volt
Speedmaster Mono Hardware System with 150 flex cable
Octura Flex Hex Motor to Drive Shaft Couplers: 5mm x .150-Small
Adjustable Motor Mount 540 Size
(Castle Creations Hydra 120 ESC )- IF I CAN FIND SOMEPLACE THAT HAS ONE IN STOCK-ANY IDEAS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Also I got a little carried away when i was bored this weekend and didnt like how the boat looked with old stickers and some minor holes and scrapes, so i decided to completely strip it down and fil the holes with resin, and wetsand and prep the hull for painting. I have to say I am pretty nasty with a spray gun, all i can say is wait to you fellas see the end result. I have included some pictures off the hull in its prep stages. Please ignore the Primer that is only halfway don on the hull, i thing im gonna use a different kind, so i didnt finish the primer. The color I got from the best body supply shop in New Jersey. Gavins autobody in patterson NJ has everything you need, and Dennis and his guys over there are the Gurus of all things painted. Anyway the color is a Mazda Blue Metal Flake and will be insane when it is done. Still deciding if im gonna go single stage or 2 stage Base Coat and Clear. Check out the pics below. I will be painting the hull next weekend, hopefully by that time some of the parts will come rolling in.

ALSO:
You might all be shocked as hell like I was on this, but I emailed ABC Hobby and let them know I was rebuilding my boat. They got back to me and said that although limited they still do have some parts for these boats on hand. Therefore I am getting a completely new sticker set sent to me from Japan for around 30 bucks including shipping. The stickers are gonna look great up against the blue metal flake paint. I was gonna do sunburst orange with a metalflake (again these paints dont have metal chips in them its actually small plastic chips, but u guys knew that) Sorry for the long winded post but i can finally see this thing starting to come together and its getting me pumped to build this BadA** project. Take a look below and let me know what you think

for the transom reinforcement i usually use ply sealed with everdure.

Good decision on the 10XL, thats the motor i would probably use if doing such a project.
Everything else seems, good, I reckon this boat is going to turn out really nice

I have one suggestion for the hull if you want to put more work into it - skin the planing strakes with thin plastruct on the bottom side, then back fill the gap on the sides with thick CA, this will not only stiffen the hull but add sharpenable edges to the strakes which will reduce drag and give you some free speed

Thanks Crabstick, Do you think the stainless will work well, when i test fitted it into the transom it stiifened it up extremely well and didnt add that much weight. It might be tough to drill through, but i figured it is a better material for the long run.

TBH id probably just use ply as its what Ive always used and it works well and has a little give in it, but i cant see any reason why it wont work.. Twill be strong thats for sure

I think im gonna go with the stainless. I test fitted it and it fits perfectly and as i mentioned it didnt add that much wait at all, and you are right it is definately strong. I had another idea that i wanted to run past you guys. I was thinking about using expanding spray foam to use as flotation and I was also thinking it would reinforce the hull. The only thing I am worried about is that the foam will expand too much and mishape or bow out the hull. What are your thoughts on this.

P.S. Today is my favorite day of the month because its "PAY DAY". Now I can go out and actually buy all these parts that I have been talking about and finally start to really get this build moving. I cant wait to see my bank account drop like a rock after purchasing these parts but how does that old saying about boats go (a boat is like a hole in the water that you throw money into) I think they were talking about their fullsize counterparts but who cares you only live once and I can see how this hobby can get addicting. I will keep you posted on the build. Thanks again.

A boat
Is a hole in the water
Surrounded by wood
Into which, one pours money

So true, so true

Build is looking good, I loved the orange, but i can't wait to see the new color on there.

Dont use the expanding foam, its rubbish and yes sometimes it will over expand popping your deck off, it also soaks up water.

I use pool noodles, they will soak up water over time, but i have watertight boats so dont get water in often if need be they can be removed - velcro them in is the trick

If you want to stiffen the hull, build a ply bulkhead or something.
