Default RE: V-24 Racing Boat

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since I last posted this boat. Over the winter I bought a 5000MAH LIPO for the boat. Since the LIPO is bigger & heavier than the stock LIPO I removed all the gear and gutted the stock wood stand. I made a new wood stand to fit the LIPO and the gear which is situated differently than the original. While the motor and all the RC gear was out, I gave the entire interior a coat of epoxy to make the boat a little stronger.

The boat came painted gloss black, but I decided to sand the bottom and paint it flat black. I personally think it looks a little better .

The stock prop was also changed for a Grimracer 440 52/3 prop.

Over the next few weeks, I will post some pictures of it on the water & give updates.

-Rich.

Hi Mark,

Its cool to see someone else with this boat. I am not sure how the motor/ESC will to with that arrangement. I am guessing that the motor will take it but the ESC might be somewhere close to the redline. If you try it, just run it in 30 second bursts and monitor temps. The boat will fly on higher volts. If the ESC runs too hot, pick up one with a higher AMP rating.

I am going to run the boat in less than an hour to check out some fine tuning done during the week.

Hi,

Here are some more pictures of the V24. Today, I took it out on the pond to get more pictures. It is really hard to take pictures while I handle the boat at full speed so it did not happen. The best I got was one during acceleration. I have to wait until my wife gets back from Europe so she can photograph the run.

The wind picked up which did not help things.... so it was not long before it ended up capsized. I am having a hard time with water issues each time she blows over. I filled the exhaust ports with caulking, use hatch tape and even epoxied a soda cap to the bottom of the hatch latch to keep water from entering the interior, but still, each time she gets thrown in the drink upside down the hatch as always full of water. I still have work on that.

Today the latch broke when I removed it from the pond, I don't know how it happened so I will have to do repairs today.

Here are some pictures.

I love the V-24! I have the Cen Racing version. It isn't as nice looking as yours but as a sport boat it is adiquate. I'm interested in how well this boat runs.

Hi H20Camel,

This boat is fun, looks great, quick, ETC but like many fast RTR's it does have some issues.

In its stock form, it runs great. Lots of speed runs straight as an arrow and has room for upgrades. It is easy to tell the boat has the potential to go even faster with minor mods.

Nice photos Rich! That looks like a nice place to run. I love the shots in the shallows where the shadow of the boat can be seen on the bottom. Scared to run my SV in plces like that because it had a tendancy to submarine once in a while (don't know how deep it goes). So who's shooting such good pix? Looks like a good camera and near perfect conditons.

Thanx SV!

I live near a bunch of ponds and lakes but I use this pond as my boat test pond. It is actually a childrens beach in the summertime so the water is not too deep but good to use to fine tune my boats. Retrieval is not a nightmare if it blows over. The shallow pics are cool, but a little risky. Where those shallow pics were taken, it is a only few inches deep and is enough not to ground out so it was ok. The conditions were great today, light winds but enough to create perfect chop throughout the pond. The camera used was an old Olympus digital camera. I recruited my friend to snap the pictures seen today. He did not think the pictures would be turn out good, but they were ok.

I will post more pictures of this boat and give progress updates as I go along.

Default RE: V-24 Racing Boat

Hello everyone,

Another update.

Last night I did the final adjustments on the V24. Because it is a steerable outdrive, the boat had a tendency to over steer causing it to flip during right turns. The power of the prop would overtake the servo causing it to swing the drive as far as it could go. To remedy the issue, I set up steering parameters near the servo. I set it up so that the servo arm moves only a few degrees before it is stopped by a wood post. Because the motor has plenty of torque, the outdrive should only move slightly in each direction. (Sort of like a car at high speeds) After I set it up, there was a huge improvement in steering but because the servo arm is long it would move slightly at high speeds. To remedy it further, I put a pushrod connector at the end of the servo arm and connected it to a thick rubber band that is wrapped around the ESC wood support located a few inches across from the servo arm. This put tension on the servo arm to stay at 0 degrees and will only move when the servo forces it to move. This is easier than modifying the servo location to be even closer to the LIPO.

The boat ran PERFECTLY today. It runs fast, straight, does not over steer and turns beautifully! This was my best run to date. Now I finally trust this boat in high speed maneuvers and capsizing will be at an absolute minimum.

All the bugs finally seem to have been worked out. (No Jiinx)

Edit: spelling correction.

Here are those pictures.

Default RE: V-24 Racing Boat

Update,

I have run this boat many times in the past month. This boat is very reliable and I have had no issues with it to report.

Today I did have to fish it out of the lake because I struck a large tree branch that was underwater. The outdrive struck the branch and disconnected from the shaft. The boat was able to rev but did not move. I had no choice but to go swimming. Luckily I was able to swim to it and push it toward the shore as I swam. When I take the boat out, I make sure to have a swim trunks on in the event something like this happens.

I was surprised that there was no damage to the drive. I was expecting to get the boat back and do some overhauling. The drive is apparently designed to swing out and disconnect from the shaft without damaging the boat in the event it strikes something hard. The prop was also in good shape as well.

hey rich hows the boat running so far? I too love the v24 boats and have had the pleasure of sitting in one :P id just like to know hows the drive holding up to the uprated motor? ive herd that because the whole drive steers, they tend to loose alot of power and have a tendancy to snap :S
if i were to get this boat would there be enough space to fit the brushless motor and ecu from the supervee27? i have had this motor and esc kit sitting around for sum time now so i suppose its time to put it to good use!

thanks

Default RE: V-24 Racing Boat

Hi Rasta,

The boat & drive are holding up well. I still have no issues to report & have been using the boat regularly over the summer.

I agree, the steerable outdrives are known for power loss and this one was no exception. The drive was known for over steer with too much thrust coming from the prop during sharp turns. To address the issues of over steer & power loss, I set up steering restrictions on the servo that steers the drive. By doing this, it keeps the drive from swinging too far left or right which prevents over steer at high speeds and power loss during sharp turns.

This small adjustment keeps the boat stable during high speed turns and has since eliminated the power loss because the drive has a very limited turning radius. The limited turning radius does not really affect the boats maneuverability because the boat is going fast so minimal steering is needed for a responsive turn.

I like the idea of using a Super Vee or UL-1 motor & ESC for this boat and have considered it in the past. This boat is a good candidate for that set up & I will likely go that route during the next overhaul. At that point, I will probably also retire the outdrive for something a little more conventional although it hasn’t been very problematic using this motor.

I've had this boat for a few years and it still runs good.

Here is a recent onboard video I loaded up on youtube.

Just a thought but if you a good transmitter you set exponential and/or dual rates to have both good high and low speed turning?

Yep this is the same boat that I have...My boat was an earlier issue made for the European market whereas the one you posted id for the american Market. Note the tail flag difference.

This boat was inspired by an an actual V-24 racing boat.
