Default Catamaran single or twin drives?

How would most of you guys set up a cat? Single or twin drives? Does having twin drive translate into a huge performance gain?
I grew up on full size boats, have operated all kinds and I work on boats now. However I am not that familiar with the performance characteristics of race boats, full size or scale. What I do know about hulls and drives, I am not sure carries over to model boats.

Thanks,
Sean

Twin drives for the awsome sound!

Single motor set-up is more efficient though.

Really? Wow, I wouldn't have thought that... I can get better performance out of one bigger motor than two smaller motors?
I am seriously considering an HPR 06 and while I have seen a couple of single motor setups on the HPR, the vast majority of them are twins. Those european guys who run them seen pretty serious about speed thats why I assumed that the twin would be faster.
Let me ask another question; I believe the HPR was designed with two motors in mind, would I be opening a can of worms trying to set it up with one?
Either way I have a feeling that bout is no slouch. I have yet to find a slow HPR on youtube.

THE GUYS ON YOUTUBE GO BIG!!! MOST USE 2X BIG NEU MOTORS W/ HYDRA 240HV ON EITHER 2X 10S LIPO OR 60 CELLS I THOUGHT ABOUT BUILDING A LARGE CAT BUT REALIZED ITLL COST A COUPLE THOUSAND FOR AN AVERAGE SETUP. LOOK AT MHZUSA.COM FOR PARTS FOR YOUR BIG SCALE MONSTER CAT.

Yes, the more I think about it I am definitely going with twins on that boat. Its going to be a long build. That stuff is expensive.... Be a really nice boat when its finished though. Cant wait.

If you are going to go with a HPR 06 or any quality large cat hull then twins are a must.

This is for the simple reason that if you have spent that much on a hull then do not skimp on the power, go for twins.

I do not have a twin-cat.......yet
When I do I will design and build my own, long story there.

I have done a LOT of research on twin setups for cats and can advise if you like, Jan (pompebled) will help too.

There is a LOT of info over at OSE on twins and the HPR hulls in particular.

PM me if you need some links or further info.

I'm doing a budget twin cat.

An Ebay 34" cat $99, 2-7L Fiegao motors (slightly used $35each), 2- SkyWing 100Amp BEC Esc's coated and Etti Cooling plates $60 each. Cables I got on Rumrunner swap shop L & R for $20, motor mounts $5 for the pair, Zippy 5000 20C Lipo's $26 each, Drives and rudder from HOTR $75, Couplers $20. Not bad for a start...

99

$464 so far... Just a few more things left...

The sound of twins running... PRICELESS!!!!!!

I think in RC just like in 1:1 boats there is a point where you can only get so much power out of a single. In a 1:1 is a 700 cubic inch big block with a blower on it making 1400 hp. If you want more than that you need a second motor. I think you have more power options here but you still hit the celing at some point. The HPR's are big boats and you need alot of power to puch them. I think anything under 35 inches you'd want to go with a single setup. much bigger and start thinking about 2 motors.

Starting off with 2S and maybe try 3S after bugs are out.

twin is not really slower than single for some cases, twin setup with draw much less amp than single, thats mean you can swing more aggressive props, plus alot running time with twin setup. My Hpr07 almost 60" twin 1527 hit 76mph on 10s and more than 4 mins running time, and my single Neu 2230 on 10s2p will do just about 73mph and less than 3 mins running time even with a 45" hull

great example of overpowering a boat. The mean machine is a pretty heavy 29" cat so that's about the best case for twins that small. I know a guy who was running a single motor setup in the same boat. 6s 10xl I think he was getting 55 out of it. That boat would be fun to watch but he needs two recovery boats at all times. Would be the expensive way to go that fast too.

Really? I always heard that the MM made a good solid boat for high power electric b/c it was a gas boat and was built solid for that, making it heavy. I'll shut up now.

I think I came with about 6oz less than my UL-1 even with the nitro stuff still in the boat that I'm able to use with the brushless setup

Sorry to thread jack. But an HPR 135 with twin Big Neu Motors, Hydra 240HV's, and 10s Lipos, will have short run times? Not enough to heat race?

What motors used?
What Mah batteries used?

it all depends on setup!

Twin Neu Motors 2215/1Y, Hydra 240HV's, I'm thinking 4 5s 5000mah packs, if I'm right that's 10s per motor correct? I'm kinda new to FE.

A few things here.
If in doubt on the run times suggested then read post #14.....then ask the owner. Kevin is a nice guy and will answer questions.

If you are to run a big cat that is 36"+ then you need a lot of power to go fast.
Power costs $$
Single or twins is the owners / builders call. Twins will cost a little more, there are advantages to twins.

For pure speed the arguement will run for a long time as there are a couple of German fellows that have cleared 200km/h with twin powered cats.

Your boat and your call !
Single or twin ?
Target speed ?
Saw or oval ?
Race or fun ?

These are a few of the considerations that need to be made when entering a project like large fast cats.
I have done a lot of reading and know enough to know that I am not ready yet.

I'll stick to S-motors in my small fleet for now !!
