Default will build a 60 inch catamaran.

Hi everyone I have decided to build a 60 inch catamaran out of plywood. I was thinking about to install two nitro big block engines, I dont know if that will be enough, what do you think? After finishing the wood catamaran I was planing to make a fiberglass version out of it, but how does it work. If the nitro engines do not work I was also planing to install two chainsaw engines.

we make a couple of 60" cats out of carbonfiber for 350.00, pretty hard to beat, but not a replacement for the hobby of building your own boat, nitro motors will cost as much if not more then a pair of good gas motors, so if you are willing to spend the money on nitro i would go gas,its more bang for the buck, both will be plenty for a 60" cat if you keep the weight down, ours are normally around 13lbs for the hull with rails and a hatch, if you are going to pull molds off of it on day try not to make any negative overlaps that will keep the part from coming out of a mold,if you presue it i will help you when you post as much as i can, here are some of our boats

hey Eric welcome to the forms, once you do some researce im sure you will decide gas is the way to go, also your chain saw motors will be very heavy and not give you the rpms needed for speed, and you will need speed to pack air under your cat to gain lift, thats whats needed to haul the mail, keep us posted

Unless you plan on producing glass hulls id forget the idea of making a glass version of your wooden one as the cost of making moulds isnt worth it for just a one off.If you do plan on selling them then you will have to make sure the product is worth all the cost or people just wont buy them and you will be left out of pocket big time, just my honest opinion.Factor in the cost of a hull materials wise alone and then times that by 6-8 and you will have the cost of materials for your moulds, its not cheap and very few people realsie what actually goes into it not only money wise but time and effort and not least a little skill is needed.

Hi all, Okey the chainsaw engine is out of bussines but what would be better, if I install 2 or maybe 3 Force 21ER engines (nitro 6500-29000 rpm, 2.28hp x2=4,56Hp) or Zenoah 26 that only produces 3300-12000rpm. If we look at the stats the nitros would probably beat the gas engine, or not? And does someone have experience with cheap chinese pocket bike engines, and what about airplane engines can you use them as boat engines??

well twins are nice for sure, but two .21 nitro in a 60" Cat is not going to do much.

The numbers you mentioned for the Zen are true, for a stock Zen.
but check the numbers for a modded Zen, you will see the difference.
look at all of them, single, twin Zen, inline S520.

only to show a few.

Default RE: will build a 60 inch catamaran.

to small of a prop will only boil the water and not push the boat, for your 60" cat you would be looking at something like a cmb 100 a single or twins and it would be very fast, but for two rcmk k-30 i think the hp is around 18-19000 and 7 hp on a 390.00 or so motor that needs no feild gear and uses pump gas, will also swing a much bigger prop, hp is divided in 2 categories torque= the ability to push weight, and rpms how fast, until something breaks, in the case of your .21 it will be the contact area of the prop with the water, those little props simply will break loose and boil the water without pushing the weight, airplane motors have mostly torque so the will work but they will be slow, have not priced them in a while but i think all the .90 and 1.00 nitro marine motors are over 500.00, the difference in speed will be very little, they do have more rpm but swing a smaller prop, the k-30's are the most bang for the buck right now, you can check them out at gizmo motors.com

Hi, new member here as of today - "boofhead" with similar aspirations to Eric. I have a Chinese 100 cc. inline twin cylinder unit which, I feel, would push a 60" hull along quite nicely, I would like to build the hull myself as buying locally would mean instant poverty. Buying a ready-made hull in the US at the "right price" would be good, but the initial price plus airfreight to the 'end-of-the-world' where I live could/ would be prohibitive. So, I'm after some plans, too. Monohull would be fine.

Cheers and best wishes from Canberra..........
