hey folks! so, i am running a brass tube liner inside my stuff tube, instead of nylon, on my 1/4" hydro drive. my problem is, no matter how hard the liner is in there, (no annealing done to the liner, so it's stiff following the bends of the outer tube), it creeps forward, until it starts gettin' a little to comfy with the collet. i even tried cleaning the surfaces of both, and soldering it to the outer, (not a ton, but a good amount, standard wiring solder) but it broke the joint and still creeped forward and grabbed my shaft saver collar and made a nice mess of my shaft, inner liner, etc.

so, i am going to remove the damaged liner, and i was just looking for some suggestions on how to keep that baby in place when i make the new one, but not make it so hard that i can't ever get it back out to replace it if it wears.

Why dont you just run your flexi in a single stuffing tube??? if its brass know its only going to be on brass if you run it straight!

hello! the thing is, there is already a very thick, brass stuff tube in there, but much larger than the flex shaft. i need to run one inside that to take up the slop between the shaft and the original stuff tube, which had a poly liner in it. make sense? i don't want to tear the boat up just to install a permanent 'smaller' stuff tube, it's much easier to just run one inside the original, that helps take up some space of the old poly liner.......

You need to cut the bigger tube so you have enough of the smaller one sticking out at the motor end and fix it in place with a t bar so it cant move job done.Or just buy a new teflon liner even easier haha.

maybe you could cut it down the centre a inch through it if you have some spare at the engine end then pull back both sides and maybe clamp it to the stuffing tube if you have
enough room to stop it movin forward

Are you sure that you have a correct direction flex shaft in there? Reason I ask is that normally the shafts are wound so that when running, the grease / oil in them is driven down the shaft to the stuffing tube, and also so the shaft winds tighter as the torque being transmitted down it increases, if yours is drawing the brass liner up to the engine, it would appear that maybe your flex shaft is the wrong wind on it.

i hear you loud and clear, i checked all that, and we have everything rotating and wound in the proper direction. i also had a limited amount of space between the collet and tube to prevent any 'cable whip' as well. best i can tell, between the vibration, and just general normalcies of hard running, it's working it's way up.

i think i fixed it, i made a two piece collar that will go over the outer stuff tube, which i cut two slits in, so now the collar compresses the outer tube onto the inner tube quite tightly. i can post a pic up later, when i get the new inner tube permanently mounted....

I have a "doubled up" tube like that for my S-520 inline. What I did to hold the two pieces of tubing together is what would be called a
"plug weld". Only I used solder instead. About an inch from both ends of the outer tube, I drilled about a 3/16" hole. Then put the tubes together and soldered the inside tube to the outside at the hole. The excess solder can be filed off. The only draw back is that the tubes have to be straight to do this and make the bend after the tube is one. As far as replacement goes, I will replace both pieces together and re-bend as needed. Hope this helps. I also used a third short piece of tubing to pass through the hull. This is glassed in and the two piece tube gets plug soldered to this also, However, this joint can be re-heated in order to remove the two piece tube for replacement. Have not had any problems with this set up.
