Default MHZ Hunter - Fountain 38

Hi guys, i'm starting my new project, at the beginning was supposed to be electric but too many problems with runtime, especially with the z-drives, eat lots of amps...
This will be a slow project, and still don't know which engine will mount, mhz has the new Zenoah G320 PUM2 32cc and 4.5 hp what do you think? weak?
I'm looking to scale details and reproduction, not so much the speed, a normal speed will be ok, i'm not going to race. The first steps are the z-drives and the Mercruiser trim tabs.

No, is 69 inch hull, 38 are the feet of the original fountain offshore powerboat, like in the first pic, "Pump it"

Read on another forum where the G320 is not up to par as of yet. Maybe you can do some more research before you order it.

With a nice hull and drives like that you should be looking a QD "Sportsman" 29.5 and 8 HP guaranteed

Nice project

Thanks guys, well i had thought zenoah becouse i have a 260 pum in my shockwave 55 and it runs great, also zenoah has a lot of accesories easily available here in europe like clutch, boardstarter, m.mounts etc. but if you say that does not speak well around about this g320 i will have to think about it.
Randy, is there any dealer in europe? I only found quickdraws in the USA...
I'm taking advantage of the last free time I have, i'm in my last week of holidays, so trying to do as much as possible before starting with my everyday work.

Quickdraws only come from QD is US - that's how you know for sure it's a QD. Any clutch that will fit a Zen will fit a QD. I live in Canada and I just order couple spare parts and good to go for a long time. QD ships anywhere and service is the best out there. Plus there stuff is top class - like your boat. Call them they have what you need. And it's good to go when you get - no engine mods needed.

Just my 2 cents -------- nice boat

Totally agree with Randy 100%. I run QD's in all my race boats! They even break the motors in for you so once you hit the water its full throttle.

Well, i've been looking at QD website and the prices are quite high, the new PIONEER SPORT, a 8 HP 29.5 CC costs $855 with paypal plus accesories plus shipping = more than $1000 for one motor, then we have to calculate the clutch, muffler - exhaust, starter etc. instead 30,5cc costs $ 1,345 plus all = a lot of money, i know you have to pay for the quality but i also have to think about the costs, i spent €1200 just for the hull and the z-drives and € 90 for shipping from Germany. Maybe I'll decide for a QD, but perhaps this will cost me more time, you know...
Ok, the z-drives are up, i mounted at a distance of 80 mm between the axes because of the gearbox, also 80 mm, so everything will be straight.

If you buy the MHZ 320 it's 298 E - that's around 400 US for a stock engine. 4 hp. - so in actual $ your talking 450 more for a QD

You need to buy mounts & exhaust for the 320 (320 mounts not same as rest) so those are around same $$ with either motor. Both come with starters - EZ start on QD

Good luck - nice build ----- I always liked MHZ stuff (Have a Drambuie & use a Jet drive from them on another hull)

Cheers

Randy

Thanks Randy, you're very friendly and helpful. While i go ahead with the work, i can think of which one engine take, is only a question of money, if i were rich i would not hesitate to hold these QD engines, maybe even twins, but i'm not so i'll have to make a great sacrifice, we will see.
Now i need your help with something else, as i said before, i want to make some cool details, and one of them is the electrical opening of the hatchback, initially i intended to do it to the rear, like in the pic, but after some tests was too complex, so i decided to do it sideways, but now the problem: i thought about the electric piston from "Lado" (used in giant model aircraft) but not sure about the torque, so i did some tests with the servos, i took 2 servos for this boat a 5kg for trotthles and a 24 kg for the steering, first i tried the small one and nothing, then i tried the big one (24 kgs) and surprisingly even that, low torque. What can i use???
I'm mounting the hinges right now, i put the pics later.

Thanks

Whatever motor you use is totally up to you QD was only a suggestion based on my previous experience with gearboxes and bigger boats.

You trying to do something like this ?

Yes Randy, that's exactly what i want to do, but with more realism, slower movements, that you can get with Lado electric pistons like in this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=757uATCwzjs also my hatch is quite bigger than those on the miss geico, but this piston has a security sistem thats stops automatically when something block it and i think that the hatch weight will take it as block and will stop before opening. I haven't found anything about the power of this piston, or torque on the internet, and that is why i'm insecure about this. http://www.lado-tech.net/en/7-e-doors

This is my hatch now, with side opening.

Part of the hinging of the rear canopy may be easier with their (Lado) hinges ? As they have 3 pivot mounting points

Yes Randy, should be easier, but a have a big problem, the weight of the canopy is 550 gr. i spoke with one of the best aircraft shops here in Italy "8fly" and they told me that this piston can't raise this weight. When i did the tests, i also used those hinges, the only difference is that they are of plastic (pic), and even worked.
If i put the arm with the servo in position 1 in the pic nothing happens but if i put it in position 2 in the pic the servo raises it, however, the piston must be mounted for sure in position 1,and for this i need power so i don't know how to solve this.... Randy, is that Miss Geico yours?

Miss Geico not mine ...

I see how it would lift easier in position 2 - perhaps adding a spring to hinge to help open or resign linkage with a bell crank. adding a second cylinder so you are lifting at both hinges at same time ... maybe

Not sure hard to solve without seeing boat in front on me

With boats most people always want to be faster. As big and heavy as this build is and the power loss with a gear box, I think the boat will be a slug unless you put some real power behind it. Your build is so far using the best of the best in quality parts. No point in worrying about money now!!

Have you thought about a twin inline?

BTW - I have owned 2 QD's (own a QDP 30.5 now) and they are indeed a lot of money but you won;t be disappointed. Well worth the money in my opinion

Ok Randy, I'll try your suggestions, maybe the crank is the best solution, i don't know, will have to try, I started with my everyday work, so don't have too much time now. Yesterday I cut the the canopy windows, now I have to cut the plastic windows, transparent pvc.

Paul, I have a twin in my apache 84, rcmk, and runs very well, but now i want to go simple, 2 cylinders are double trouble, Randy has put a video up here of another Hunter, features a single Blata motor, I think it is a 40cc, with gearbox, that's what I would like to do, and even runs fast enough. So I'm looking for a single powerful motor. I know it makes no sense to worry about money now, if i want to keep the quality, but more expensive are the pieces, the more time it takes me to get them, this is what I meant to say, if I have to wait more time, I will. I'm also a musician, and I still have to finish paying my new digital piano, so....

Regards

I used those hinges on my boat but for smaller hatches. Remote controlled.

Yes the Blata would be a good choice for sure. I too have other interests. Just not enough money to indulge them all LOL Looking forward to seeing what you do with this build. It's going to be nice.

That was a great build, Alex. The remote controlled hatches were a nice touch. Did the person you sold that boat to ever run it?

Hate to be bringer of bad news but that drive won't stand up to a qd about 6hp is all you want to put through one of these drives have three of them you also need to be quick on the throttle they don't like big shock loads I have a full mod 26 cc S&S billet RCMK that I'm leary to run with my mhz s6 on a 57 " Apache

Alex, first of all I have to say that your Interceptor cat looks really great, i'm also following your 95 cat post, huge project! would like to ask you what are you using to open the small hatches? are they servos? if so, which servo are they? I tried with a 24 kg / 333 oz servo (pic) and nothing to do...

Paul, the problem of the Blata motor is that is not available anywhere, at least I did not found it, i saw some chinese replica but I don't trust, also someone recommended me the Tiger King engines, but I don't know them, I just seen on the internet.

Rcguy1411, I didn't understand what you mean, correct me if I'm wrong, you say that these drives can't hold a 6 hp motor? Maybe you're right, this is what is written on the MHZ web page Z-Drive: """Suitable for motors max. 26ccm or electro max. 2,0 . 2,5 kW Max. rotation: 35.000"""

I don't think a single QD through a gear box will be putting 6 hp out per drive - at most it would be 3 or 4 ---------- 8 hp divided by 2 is 4 hp (Max) per drive. But I have heard things about the MHZ drives when they come unloaded not doing well.

A inline may max out 2 drives through a gearbox (if the drives are rated at 6 hp - which I heard but never seen anything from MHZ)

I've heard of the gear issue with everyone of those style of drives - I think you have to watch the 'shock load' when it comes out of the water.- I don't think I would try a single drive by itself behind a QD - like RC guys says

Never did see Alex's boat on any RC site after he sold it.

Randy

These drives DON T like a lot of load ie. I'd the prop comes out of the water and you don't get off the throttle you will start breaking parts the new NXT drive is supposed to be able to handle more power the video posted with the Balta uses a gearbox so the torque of the engine gets divided in half with an rpm increase of 16% so you don't put as much stress on the gears Imo a qd on one of these drives (I have the same as you ) would not last long don't get me wrong these drives are great and I'm not bashing but they do have a limit and I think anything over 6 hp and your going to have issues these drives are also a lot of work I change gear oil after ever weekend of running and always check levels before running on a light hull with a QD would maybe survive longer Rember a stock 26 cc zen only puts out 3-3.5 hp and that's what these drives were designed to handle so doubling that hp just puts more stress on them

He plans on a gear box - single motor and 2 drives ------- exactly why I recommended what I did - plan and simple

No single (common engine) will put 6 hp out per drive through a gearbox ...A inline OR a BZM Blata maybe but no QD - Zen or TK

Just my 2 cents

Randy
