paint
what kind of paint and clear coat or final coat spray on do you use for a fast gas? and do you have to wait 30 days before putting it in the water like cars having to wait 30 days before you should wash it? also have any good links to some good airbrushes?

RE: paint
You shouldn't have to wait 30 days to wash a car after it is painted. If you bake the paint/clear on, you can wash it shortly after taking it out of the paint booth. This should be the same for painting boats.

RE: paint
you shouldnt go through an automatic car wash for thirty days.you shouldnt wax it for 60 days because it can lock the solvents in that are trying to escape.any good basecoat clearcoat urethane for your boat

RE: paint
I used to work for the highest rated body shop in my area and we would always wetsand/compound/polish/wash and then wax the vehicle before it would be delivered to the customer. Never heard of solvents trying to escape. Just my $0.02

RE: paint
30 minutes at 160.when you bake and let cool down, yes the paint is technically dry.it is not cured.a hi solid urethane will actually cure for ninety days.i buff cars 30 minutes after they leave the booth but that doesnt mean they are cured.when you see a car that was painted for two weeks put your nose to it and take a big whiff.thats solvent evaporating.if you trap that inside the paint it will turn into microscopic bubbles that cause the finish to lose some of its gloss or even delaminate after a few years.i have been to factory training centers of sikkens, ppg and dupont.i think i could be considered an authority on the matter. btw polish is not wax

RE: paint
that depends on your accesability to equiptment and your wallett.if you dont have a spray gun and compressor, etc.you may want to look into having it proffesionly done.the quantity of paint you will need to buy will cost you alot also.as in you will have alot of material left over.you could probably do a search here and find a cheaper alternative than auto paint.sorry i couldnt help.btw a good airbrush is paasche.google it

RE: paint
if your just going to paint it a solid color i'd use epoxy paint. if your not concerned about price have a body shop paint it for you and have them use awlgrip. its what most real boat builders use and it is probably the baddest stuff you can get. its durability is unrivaled! it ain't cheap though. i wouldn't do it myself though unless you know what your doing. 2 part epoxy paints require epoxy reducer which is very very toxic stuff.

Izvagias......I use to work at the finest bakery in town. If you bake your rolls for 15 minutes you will have to wait at least thiry minutes to eat them unless you want to burn your mouth. Also, If you put the icing on too soon it will just melt off. You might consider waiting to glaze until the rolls are completly cool. If you want to talk chocolate chip cookies that's a whole different ball of wax. Do you use yeast or baking powder in your rolls?

del, your just wrong! its impossible to get good coverage unless the icing is melted and gives an even flow into the spirals of the roll. as for the chocolate chips, i have always found that i get the best results by eating the dough without cooking at all. results are good and there's no cook time!

I dont post here all that often, I'm still new to boats! But I just wanted to say I needed a good laugh. Thanks!
In reference to painting a boat.... I will have someone do mine. I have the idea in my head, now to search out various skilled parties and get an estimate.

No i don't care, i can take a joke. As i said, you learn something new everyday. I don't claim to be anywhere near an expert in the matter just speaking from my experience.

RE: paint
its all in fun. no ill intent.
i have heard both sides of this debate before though. my friend runs his dads multi-million dollar equiped collision facility that only does collision work. its one of those very high tech super clean facilties that feels more like a lab than a garage. they are very meticulous and have been around for 30 years. they do the finest work i've ever seen and he told me something about the really high quality stuff (what they use) comes from a german company i believe. it is cured via ultra violet lamps and they expose them for one day i think. but when you pick up your car it has been polished and waxed and they have a lifetime gaurantee. i think that he said that some paints of lesser quality require a longer cure time and your not supposed to wax until its completely cured. its been a while since i had this conversation with him and i might be fuzzy on some of these details but that is what i got out of it. i'll have to call him and ask again. i wish he'd paint my damn boat!

Yes, guess you didn't hear that siskel and ebert started rating body shops as a side job... I Never claimed to be a paint master or an "authority" (i worked there for a part-time job before i left for college) but you would have to read my posts to understand that too.

RE: paint
we all been there! no prob. i'm sure you're very skilled painter and have forgotten more than i'll ever know. i might not have conveyed my thoughts on it clearly, my point was that it seems to be a question that comes up alot and i've heard both sides present a pretty convincing logical case. then again, i ain't no painter!
